Didn't know if that was a good deal or not but it had a magnifier on the front too. I imagine it will continue to collect dust in true LGS fashion for years to come lol. |

I'm content with it, even if not correct. |

Would an Aimpoint 5000 XD 2x be clone correct or just the 5000?

It has the upgraded circuitry, stronger adjustment knobs, and some what stronger rotary switch. As far as looks it’s good to go for that 3-5000 footprint. Only reason I didn’t spring for it is because I had my M2 already in the safe, sitting unused for a few years and was able to put those funds towards the other hard to find items like the M-14 surefire Mount and ARMS 5 slot carry handle mount. My clone is just that, so a few liberties were taken but I’m happy with how it turned out...you would get no grief from me using that optic. Edited for spelling. |

Anyone got a set of the old 30mm rings for the 5000 lying around? I need a set.
|
|
|
If I’m not mistaken those old rings you see used are Leupold “Rifleman” series rings.
Not exactly hard to find but not easy either, I saw a few when I was considering the 9000 Aimpoint...hope this helps, Cheers. |
|

Apparently Leupold has discontinued the 30mm Rifleman vertically split rings.

You guys looking for the Leupold split rings, try Gator's in Kelso, WA. I think I saw 3 or 4 packs of them.
Have a part number when you call, they are SUPER busy. |

Castle nut is anachronistic, but A2-style lower forgings were common, and it was not unheard of for guys to have receiver extensions drilled with extra holes for custom stock positions. The only other glaring item, IMHO, is crush washer versus peel washer, but I would say it captures the look and spirit of these weapons way better than most--a lot of replicas I see are weird hybrids of Ranger Regiment, Delta, and Movie-Version guns that don't actually look like anything that was actually used. ~Augee |

This is honestly one of my favorite eras because it’s the intersection of so many of my interests. I’m honestly considering building myself a new set of “period clone” AN/AVS-6s with the 15mm eyepieces and all to go with my old IR lasers.
The only annoying thing is having only one 723 build currently, and having a whole library of vintage parts and accessories. The AN/PAQ-4/4A, while not particularly popular compared to others was one of the IR lasers present and used. ~Augee |

Here's my attempt: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/675/22237794509_05f5eebe6e_b.jpg The sling had two metal slides, doubled up on each other, so I pulled them apart. I wrapped one end of the sling through the slots on the stock, then secured that end to itself using one slide. The ALICE strap didn't have any hardware other than the rectangular wire loop used to quick release from the shoulder pad of the pack, and the quick release bracket used with the lower strap. The lower strap has one end that's been doubled up on itself and sewn together so it won't go through the quick release. The other end has a loop sewn into it. Since I had no other hardware/slides/buckles to work with, I strung the lower strap through the FSB, and then through the loop in the end of the strap to secure it to the gun. Then, I took the other end of the Carbine sling, and ran it through the loop on the end of the ALICE pack strap, and secured it to itself the same way I did with the stock end, using the other slide. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/711/22424592405_66681ffd51_b.jpg https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5812/22236641290_3b2e7b9dbe_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/735/22236644490_4a0ab84565_b.jpg So, I know this is all improvised, so there's no "wrong" way, but since I'd like to set this up similarly to what was used by the rangers in Somalia. It seems to work well enough. I can sling it, pull the front strap and tighten it up to carry on my back. And I can swing it around, pull the quick release, and pull the whole thing out enough to shoulder it (semi-comfortably). And since I'm essentially improvising my improvising at this point, any opinions are welcome. Did I get it right? Am I way off? Am I missing some piece(s) still? View Quote I recently become dissatisfied with my slings and decided to make a home brew one that includes the USGI silent sling and the alice pack strap. My question is do you need that middle quick release buckle or can you cut it off and just leave the slider and attach the USGI silent sling to it? Also how long do you think such a sling would last? |
