I had a thought today; What if I took the AA Piston system with the Ultra Lite bolt carrier and drilled / tapped it for a side charger to fit in the Crosshill upper? Would this work? Are they compatible? What could go wrong? Am I drunk?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

AA has a replacement gas key so you can change out the old gas key and use the new one as the gas piston strike pad. This was the older retro fit kits they had before selling the one piece bolt carrier. They should still have this piece available on their website.

So long as there were no other modifications to a standard bolt no reason I could see that it wouldn't work.

If you're just wanting a side-charger in general though the non-reciprocating types should work out of the box since they charge in a manner similar to a standard CH.

Ah, but I do want a reciprocating charging handle. I don't like the idea of a non reciprocating one.

Then drill away!

Keep in mind though the melonite treatment makes for a VERY hard surface to cut through for the first few thousandths of material depth.  Be sure you have a hell of a bit to get through it.  I might suggest using something to cut through that before you put the bit to it, lest you wind up with a worn bit before you even really get to cutting steel.

You are better off drilling or putting the replacement piston strike key into the crosshill or other bolt handle bcg first before doing a AA bcg.

I built up a Honey Badger clone in 5.56. Been thinking of putting an Adams Arms XLP kit into it.
Are the replacement gas key/strike face durable?

The minor issues when replacing to the replacement strike key was the screws in the keys may break and the possible of receiver wear.  One of the reason AA made a one piece bcg with the skid pads for the piston kits.  I have not played with the original its.  But it is a solution for those would want to be different.
