I don't know anything about piston system ARs.  Would never pay for the overpriced HK 416 (upper).  Who makes a good piston system in the US?  Which are known and proven to be uber reliable?

Thanks

PWS offers a long stoke that's excellent and Adams Arms is probably the most popular short stoke. They have a lifetime warranty and their upper and kits are affordable

Adams Arms is American made. They offer built uppers and kits. With the kits you can build build an  upper or retrofit an existing upper.

They are well respected and are an ARFCOM Industry Partner.

I have an upper that was built with an Adams Arms piston kit and have another kit which will be incorporated in the upper I am building.

In addition to being American made they are solidly built, reasonably prices and have a good reputation.

A piston upper will weigh more that one without a piston but if you are interested in a piston rifle you already know that. I consider that a worthwhile price to pay for keeping the gas out of the upper, BCG and my face. I shoot left handed so that is more of a consideration for me.

There is a rather limited selection of hanguards and rails that can be used with a piston. Check this out before you make a decision.

Mine hasn't choked yet.  LWRCI does have an excellent reputation.

I see a lot of Adams Arms rifles posted in this forum.  Good stuff for the money.

This. I had a model 8T that I unfortunately parted ways with, but it was a good little rifle.

LWRC? Looked at the uppers $1500-$1700.
Do what you please, I got an Adams Arms upper on a Rock River lower from Cabelas for $650 in the gun library. The purchased a Adams Arms upper blem for $477 and stuck it on a Bushmaster lower for around $300. AR's are a wild deal, spend $600 or $3000.

PWS, light, well balanced, accurate, long stroke piston.....beautiful rifles and you really get your moneys worth. LWRC are nice as well but I think are overpriced for what you get.

That's what I am saying.  They are extremely reliable, and I think they are also the only long stroke piston system out there (for an AR platform gun).

Also, the fit, finish, and machining on all the PWS guns I have seen has been extremely high.  I feel like they are one of the best kept secrets in the AR world.

ARAK21. Long stroke piston argument invalid sir.

The Barrett REC7 often gets overlooked. Very pricey but also very high quality. I own the Gen II version with the slimmed down KeyMod rail and it has been running great for me. Couldn't be happier with it.

I picked up that $799 version a couple of days ago...didn't need the ones with sights.  It's exactly what they say it is...complete LWRC product...not a parts build.  It's also the later version with the one-piece BCG/op rod interface.  Love the toolless removable top rail segment for service.  I hooked mine up to a POF P415 complete lower they also had on sale that has the better drop-in trigger assembly.  Seems like a good deal that basically yielded a $1200 LWRC rifle.  I didn't find a new one on the internet with this setup or these features for less than $1800 in an LWRC.  While my lower isn't LWRC, this particular POF lower definitely has no boogers on it.

Once I put a Geissele SSA-E trigger in my Ruger SR 556 it started consistently shooting 5 shot 100 yard groups with 52 drain SMK's that ran about 0.6-0.7 moa much to my surprise.
