As you probably remember, I posted some photos of the new Lancer carbon fiber handguards that were on display for SHOT 2014. Lancer had announced models for both the 516 and 716 and both models were there at the show.
The SIG516 handguard has been shipping for the better part of the year but, for whatever reason, the SIG716 model was a bit slower to launch. Anyway, I had been keeping an eye on Lancer's website and finally saw the 716 models were in stock and shipping so I ordered one up.
The new handguard is the same basic pattern as the 516 model. It is a short section of aluminum rail that runs from the upper receiver to the gas block. Underneath is a shell that clamps around the barrel nut. The carbon fiber tube slides over this assembly and secures to the aluminum mounting base with some small Allen screws.
The new handguard is way slimmer and easier to grasp than the factory 716 monstrosity. The extended length makes for a much better handling rifle and shaves off about an ounce and a half. I haven't fired the rifle with the new forend attached but, in handing, the change in forend makes the SIG feel like a whole different rifle. I'm hoping to hit the range this weekend and I'll report back after I do.
SIG's new handguard uses the existing alignment key and screws off the factory rail:
As with the 516 model, the gas adjustment is easily accessed but the gas parts cannot be fully removed without first removing the tube from the rifle:
The aluminum rail is slotted and the carbon fiber tube slides into the slots. This makes for a very solid fit and clean look:
