Man the Handguard got hot!! I put the Magpul AFG2 on and it was a little better. Is this normal with a piston upper?

The barrel is still subjected to heat, that heat radiates outwards. So yeah, its normal

.223 Pistol =  Short piece of metal (barrel) = Less surface area = Faster heat soak.

Eh, they all get hot, what handguards are you running?
