Now that I find out they are discontinued It seems they are getting harder to find...
Is the general consensus that the SR-556 is a good choice for the money or am I better off just sticking with something like a 6920?

The SR556 is still being produced but it is now a takedown model. This added a slight amount of versatility (can swap barrels from 223 to 300 Blackout) but at an increased cost. Too bad it took Ruger this long to finally address the weight issue.
The SR556 is a good gun and you'll find many happy owners. Is it better than a Colt 6920? I guess that depends on what you want to do. If you plan on replacing forends and such, the Colt is a better choice. If you want a gun that's fun to shoot and like the idea of a piston over a gas tube the Ruger is the way to go.
My advice would be to start watching gunbroker for an SR556E. Those are a "best value."
