Lets start a Ruger SR-556 picture and info thread...

I have the SR-556FB.
Its very well built...I like it.
Great Gun.

I added an Blue Force front sling mount (Rail Mounted Fixed Loop - RMFL) and a Midwest Industries End Plate Single Sling Mount (MCTAR-13). I changed out the grip for a Magpul MOE Grip...nothing wrong with the one that came on it I just like the Magpul better. Right now it also has a Magpul Vertical fore grip (RVG). It has an EOTECH M512.A65 on top.

Here's Mine. I think the SR556 is one of the best Piston ARs on the market regardless of price. However, when you factor in the price/value, I put the Ruger near the top. IMHO of course

I've got a 556ESC, basic with non chromed bore or chamber and a non threaded muzzle and a fake M4 stock. But the thing is accurate and runs like a champ. I'll post up a picture one day, its nothing special.

I've got to get this Magpul fixed carbine stock on. Anyone know how hard it is to swap a buffer tube? The one that Ruger put on my rifle is not a standard carbine sized tube so the Magpul fixed stock doesn't fit on this one and only option is to swap it myself.

Can you do it without a lower block using just a castle nut tool?

Not hard to swap out. Your biggest problem will be if the castle nut is staked or not. If it is, some people advocate using a small punch and lightly tapping the displaced metal back into shape- sort of undoing the dimple is what you're trying to accomplish. If it's not staked, there's a possibility of Loc-Tite on the threads. A heatgun is your friend. And patience, but twist while the tube is still hot. I swapped out my stock for a UBR, and I really can't remember how the thing was held on.

Since I don't have a vice block, I just c-clamped the lower to a corner of my workbench with a scrap piece of wood to prevent marring. Kinda redneck, but it worked fine. I have a weird set of pliers that I used to twist the tube off- the pliers are slip joint, but they are slightly curved, and have smooth plastic inserts. I want to say they are water pump pliers, but have never seen a set quite like these...

Anyway, they worked fine. My UBR doesn't use a CN. I did stake my M&P though; results 6/10. I'd suggest Loc-Tite.

If you have to plow through staking, just take your time, use firm pressure and make sure all the engagement teeth mate up well. You need to be more aware of how the wrench is setting squarely in all contact points more than you need to be Hulking the weapon apart. Good luck!

Haven't had a chance to take her out yet, I've been a little slammed with work but i did gather several variations of rounds and will post once i get to the range. We have one of the largest nationwide indoor ranges opening nearby soon but roughly around June/July. I can potentially go out soon for wild board which is around the corner.

Well I traded for it. My SR 556. Sadly it is a 2013 product and as such does not have the Troy Battle Sights, instead it has Samson Battle Sights

Oh well.

Mine started like this.

Got an optic.

Added a light and an anti tilt heavy buffer

Removed the light, changed the sling, new pistol grip

As of yesterday, new grip again

Here's a thread I had going here on arfcom as well but it has since dropped off into the archives.

The gun currently is hovering at around 8,000 rounds fired and I haven't had it to the range since November

. One of these days I'll hit 10,000.

I don't think I've run the gun with actual Tula branded ammo but I have tried it with Wolf and Silver Bear. It won't run with either of these.

Curiously, the gun seems to run fine with the steel cased training ammo sold by Hornady. It also runs with the Russian steel sold under the name of Golden Tiger.

Well here an update for everyone. I had 0 problems firing 100 Tula rounds today. I started with 10 brass cased rounds, fired sixty Tula rapid fire, mixed a mag of 30 with brass steel brass steel, and then proceeded to do some reload drills with the remainder steel cased ammo. No failure to fires, no jams, and I left the range a very happy camper. I guess 100 rounds is a small test group, but its a start. lol

Sounds great to me!!! Can't ask for more than 100%

It's good to hear that the gun runs good with the Tula. So far the only stuff that I have fired through mine was a bunch of South African surplus 55 gr FMJ a small amount of PMC 55 gr FMJ and a 50 rd box of Tula Brass 55 gr FMJ and it all has been 100%.

I've had pretty good performance with Tula. Ever since I put in the heavy no tilt buffer I've had to turn the gas port all the way up to get reliable function with most steel rounds.

Don't mean to high-jack this thread but I found a Ruger SR556 5902 for $1275. Should I pull the trigger and buy it? It was the best deal I could find for a new in box ruger.

I think that is a GREAT BUY and you should do it if that is what you want. The 5902 is the SR-556 FB which is what mine is. They are selling for around $1500.00 around here and they list for $1900 but I would never pay list.

Thats a hell of a deal. Buy now. I paid 1125 for my SR556E State Compliant so another 150 on top for the top of the range is an excellent deal.

How much would you think would be a reasonable price to pay to get a SR556E barrel melonited? Would it be worth it and how clean would I have to get the barrel before sending it for processing?

Also does it appear that we'll ever have rail options? I think that a lot of weight can be shed from the front end if we could drop in a sleek keymod. Yeah the gas block is a brick but the rail don't help.

I've been hoping to see Ruger put the SR556 on a diet for awhile now. Whether it is a fluted barrel as sold on the C and CLA or a lighter handguard--or a combination of both--I really think the design would benefit.

When the SR first came out, many people complained about the non-removable piston transfer rod. I don't see that mentioned much anymore so Ruger could get by without a serious redesign of the basic system. Just flute the barrel and use a handuard like the new carbon fiber unit coming from Troy. Or use something like the Geissele MK4 or MK5 with an aluminum barrel nut and light aluminum forend.

Use a big Torx bit when unscrewing the factory Ruger flash hider. T60 fits perfectly and will keep you from marring the finish or rounding off the corners on your unit.

Since mine was the carbine version, the flash hider was pinned on. I sent the rifle to ADCO and bought the Vortex from them. They milled off the old one and then threaded and pinned on the new one. Runs great!

New to the forum and my first post. I've been lurking for a while and it was Melvin's posts on the SR556 that led me to purchase an E model. I chose a piston system AR because I recall many miserable hours cleaning the DI guns in the Army and the Ruger has not let me down. The gun is awesome and I added some OD green because I like OD green. I really love the Magpul STR stock. The stock from Ruger was not very good and it was difficult to get a consistent sight picture through the Nikon P-223. I've just worked up some reloads in .223 and I hope to get to the range this weekend to try them out.

Not much to say except I think it is a good scope for the money ($150). I drooled over the more expensive scopes, but I couldn't justify the expense at the time. I mounted the P-223 with a UTG quick disconnect scope mount and that meant I had to ad a riser, which I did. The range I shoot at is 100 yds so I like to shoot for groups, but some day I'll make it out to Peacemaker in WV to see of the BDC reticle is all that.. The scope was easy to zero as I mounted it myself at home and hit paper on the first shot. The QD mount holds a good zero when switching back and forth between irons.

Hey all,

Glad to see so many people with great taste in guns! Of the five AR's I currently own, my Ruger is by far my favorite. I purchased the SR-556E new for $1025.00
In of all places Ft. Collins Colorado. Hard to believe but mine, equipped with a compact Burris 5X compact scope I am picking off clay pigeons at 500 yards and ringing 9" steel at 600 yards! I would never have even tried a shot over 400 yards with a ..223 before. The Burris has a BDC calibrated out to 600 yards and after getting a 1/2" group at 100 yards with factory reloads during sight in and My club having steel targets set up on the 600 yard berm I thought, "Why not?" Filled in the 600 yard aperture with the the 9" plate, squeezed the trigger and enjoyed a very satisfying "Clang!" Off in the distance!
The one improvement the Ruger screams out for is a lighter trigger. Out of the box mine was nearly NINE POUNDS! I installed the JP power reduction springs and now it is a much more decent 4 pounds.
Prior to the Ruger I had spent a fair amount of money setting up a left handed Stag Varmint, with long heavy stainless bull barrel, adding the MagPul PRS stock, DPMS palm shelf pistol grip, Harris traversing bi- pod and $1,300 Leupold MK4 scope. The Ruger out shoots it all day long and as we all know is much Easier and faster to clean up. I'd love to post some pics but I have yet to figure that process out on this site. IMHO , the hand guard on both the SR556E and the Varmint model are ideal/optimum. They are sleek/ slim similar to those found on G3 guns. They are lighter and you do not feel like you are holding on to a cheese grater. I think people are rail/ gadget happy hanging on all sorts of heavy,redundant gear that make the gun clumsy and unwieldy . K.I.S.S.

I would love to be able to change out my Quad Rail for the smoother E style. Ruger NEEDS to make these hand guards swappable.

I need to get a better trigger in my 556E but I have near zero gunsmithing experience. Any disassembly is limited only to those necessary to perform cleaning.

How hard is it to swap a trigger for someone with little to no experience? Am I better buying a self contained unit just to make it easier and more idiot-proof, and if so what's the best for around $200?

The pull weight is a bit high, but I've smoothed it up with dry firing. Also the firing pin retaining pin is getting beat to hell along with the firing pin shoulder. Is there any solution to this by ways of a shrouded carrier yet, or one ever coming?

Also, will having an unshrouded carrier damage the hammer of a say a SSA?

Hi,
I'm no gun smith either but you tube has done wonders. You can vastly improve your trigger for $20 by ordering and installing the JP under powered springs in about 20 min. As well as polishing the trigger and hammer sear surfaces with a honing stone and or dreamel . All of which are covered in a couple of you tube videos. If you push out two pins and remember what position the springs are in then that's about all the is to it. The honing and polishing help a great deal in the feel of the trigger release. Truly it is not technical nor difficult. Though I felt like a complete retard after conveying all this to my friend after buying his first AR ( Ruger SR 556E) on my recommendation and after doing all of the above on four of my AR's, and then showing up at his place to do the same for his brand new gun, imagine the shame and humiliation I felt after putting the gun back together only to find it will not function because el stupido, (me) forgot to reinstall the disconnector.
The only respite from this horror is that in twenty years from now when this comes up in conversation I know we will all giggle nervously and quickly change the subject.
