Steyr is building in Austria a AR15 version with gas piston and quick change barrel

Hmmm nice. Steyr adapted the AUG barrel and piston to the AR. Visually, the only difference is the barrel sleeve which now is made into a "gas block" for the AR.

This would make this the ONLY AR15 type rifle with a true quick change barrel system. That barrel can be taken off in 2 seconds and replaced in another 5 seconds... nice.

What's more is that it features the same gas regulator as the AUG meaning that you can adjust the gas pressure going to the piston.

Any price estimate?

It looks like the pivot pin area is larger and mates up with the upper.  Breaking the gun down shotgun style doesn't appear to be possible.

Saw that too. But it is a prototype according to the only person in the know... http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_43/382339_Steyr_STM_556_AR15_Style_Rife.html

I want......no I need one of these. The quick change barrels would go great with my DIAS.

Well let`s hope Steyr-Mannlicher will build it for the European civilian market as well!

Very nice. It is something different than a typical run-of-the-mill AR.

It is quite genius to infuse the AUG gas piston system into AR platform.

Cool. Be interesting to hear more about this one.

I think if I were to have a piston AR setup I would go with something like this.

what he said and if it is 7lbs it would be light.  I can definitely see some of vltor's styling in the receivers, I wounder if  this was part of the deal for vltor to get the aug receiver contract'

Also am I the only one to notice the serialized upper?

Gotta say it...that thing looks hideous as fuck.

It might have a brilliant barrel swap design, but it'll never sell mass quantities due purely to those aesthetics.

I keep looking at that and wonder what is wrong with your eyes.
Unless you think all ARs are ugly your opinion makes no sense.

Depending on price and considering how Southern Germans are proud of their Scheise I would say this will sell very well but again according to price.
In the $1500-1800.00 range they will not be able to keep them in stock

IMO, of course

EDIT:: Oh yeah I like the gun too.

I love the way it looks. best parts of an AR with a monolithic upper and one of the best barrel change systems designed. Easy to maintain piston system and familiar controls of of your favorite little black rifle.
now lets see the price

Ok, its early, but I got a stiffy examinaing that picture.....Looks like a wel, thought out and executed piston gun. Would like to see the internals.

Now gotta go wake up the wife........

Cool!

Looks like the area just behind the gas block has an interface that connects to the front of the monolithic rail to index the barrel,
Since they are 1/4 turn interupted thread that should be all that is needed to secure and reset the barrel.

The down side is with that gas system it won't suppress well at all.

Steyr serializes everything

Not surprising since the barrel, bolt carrier and receiver on the AUG's have matching serial numbers.

Is the flat sided upper reciever  any indication of how the carrier is made ?
