I'd say its necessary for parts wear or could just be a recoil dampening feature..I would call S&W they will probably sell you (give you) the spring on the cheap..if they don't have it.. call adams arms they have them for 5.00 on their website..if that doesn't work..contact colby at western sports online and he'll help you out |

Beltor...if your purchase was recent, then you have Smith's new incarnation of Adams' Arms Piston set-up. Smith ditched the bolt tail spring and added bolt gas rings to stabilize the bolt in the BCG. Its certainly stiffer...and without the gas rings seemed to worked just fine. If you have gas rings on your bolt, then you have the correct set-up. Two improvements were made with their later uppers as well..... .18" hole for op-rod (as opposed to the bushing from earlier)...and your adjustable piston plug detent plunger is now captured by a tiny roll-pin (before it was held by a small stainless steel c-clip)...the c-clip would break due to extreme heat and recoil. Hope this helps.

Thank you, I have a new S&W with the gas rings in the bolt. After examining the manual I can see the deferens, I can clearly see that I have the new system.
