THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I am currently getting up a parts list for an AR upper I'm planning to build(this would be my first time building one). I have been debating DI vs Piston(please do not turn this into a DI vs Piston thread, I own a Piston AR and know the differences and opinions). I know I want to use a Troy Alpha 13" or 15" Rail so I began looking for a piston system that would work under an Alpha Rail that long. Adams Arms hasn't updated thier website to relect the low profile systems they have but they are in their 2012 catalog and for sale on websites.

My questions are: Does any have any experience with AA's low profile piston systems? Would they work with the Alpha rail over it? Is there another low profile piston system I should be looking at to suit my needs of it being under an extended hand rail? Or should I stick with a DI system since I'll be running an extended rail?

Like I stated this is my first build(but not new to AR's) so bear with me and please do not turn this into a DI vs Piston debate(we have all seen those enough times, and they are very unproductive).

I can't answer your question...but have asked my self and others the same question. I also run a piston, AA pic rail gas block....I thought about a AA low profile build as well, but after asking around and looking at the actual profile of the low profile block...the piston plug and inverted piston cup/rod are on the same plain as always...the only benefit to the low profile it that the pic rail has been shaved off which slightly lightens the load...but as far a height...not much better than the old set-up...so with that in mind, I'm sticking with the old design for my next build since I can't do what you or I want to do (put an extended rail over the block)...at least I'll preserve a place for a front flip up site.

That's what I was afraid of. You don't by any chance have the dimensions of the AA's low profile gas block?

The lite gas block will not fit under a rail, it's about .720 from the barrel to the top of the gas block .785 to the top of the gas plug

Thanks for the info! I guess I'll have to look in a new direction.....

So will an Osprey Defense kit work under the Alpha Rail? I'm really wanting to use the Alpha Rail and don't mind going DI but if I could I was gonna go piston.

I'd like to know this, too. I just ordered my mid-length upper from PSA with a Troy Alpha 13" 11" rail, and would like to someday (when I can afford it) convert it to a piston system. I like Osprey Defense's system largely because of how lightweight (figuratively) the install is, and because it gets good reviews here. It looks like it should work just fine, but what do I know –– I've never even held an AR in my life (unless you count the stripped lower I bought last weekend), let alone seen a Troy Alpha rail or an Osprey Defense system in person.

Basically, I just want to know how much I'm going to have to change out when I eventually do make the switch to piston...

ETA: I misspoke, I'm using the 11" rail. Still, they seem to all have the same design and differ only in length, so if it works with one it should work with all, right?
