Just finished up my two M16A1 clones. One is from the late 1960s (circa 1967) and the other from 1972-73. You will note that the early one has a D type stock, 3-prong FH, and a no forge code upper (NDS-603). The other has a CK forge code upper, E type stock, and birdcage FH. Both have Brownells 1/12 barrels and the internals are original M16 parts (modified safety, modified disconnector, and modified hammer). Lower receivers are from Nodak Spud as are the CHs. Here are pictures of each for now. It is pouring down rain, so I could not take the pictures outside where I normally do. I will get some better pics as soon as I can. It may be a while since I will be having surgery on my left heel on Friday. A big thanks to Mike and Harlan for getting everything to me before I have surgery.

ETA: Updated pics.

Put a black sling on #2 and it looks like one that I could have been issued in the 80's. Looks great (both of them).

I've never really looked into this before, but is there a difference between an M14 sling and an M1 Garand OD sling, or are they the same sling?

same slings  (as in the buckle) different cloth.
-Nylon webbing, seatbleat style nylon webbing and the original cotton

There are modern nylon versions. Side by side they are different than older nylons (webbed, not seatbelt). Years I don't know.
the vintage nylon has a better looking stamp.
The M1 garand is diffetent. its a cotton based.
I prefer then new cotton ones from the CMP. Its a light olive. Looks dern good.

As for why its made like its made like it is with the adjuster and clip...... I don't use it correctly.

I have two brand new CMP Garand slings, so I'd been planning to use one of those for my XM16E1. For my A1, I use a black cotton sling (I'm assuming they're cotton, anyway), which is what all of my issued rifles had when I was in the Army.

I buy used original USGI issue M14 nylon OD slings from What-A-Country for my ARs. They are what was used on most M16s in the field.

In the 80's, all I ever had (or saw) were the black slings. Whenever I see any images or video from Vietnam though, they're the ODs.

Anyone know when they switched from OD to Black?

What branch? I was active Army from '78 - '82, then Reserve and National Guard off and on (mostly on ) until 2010. Most of the Army slings I saw were black.

JRS was in the Marines, and they got a lot of hand-me-downs from the other services.

Regular Army. I was in the Signal Corps, so a lot of what we got could be called 'hand-me-downs' too.

I like the rifles.
It is good you got them built before your surgery.

Thanks for the pictures.
Now! I need to finish up some other builds to start on my Brownells builds.

Surgery went well. I will be off my left foot for 6 weeks. Today, my two M14 used USGO OD nylon web slings arrive for these two A1s. Now, they are complete.
