This Brownell's buffer tube assembly kit:

Comes with the A2 extension, but only a longer screw.  Does this longer screw work for both the A1 and A2 configurations with this particular buffer tube?  Or do I have to order a separate A1 screw?

The A1 stock will not need the spacer, so a shorter screw (5/8 of an inch shorter) is needed.

No, I've tried this before, and it sticks into the buffertube. This makes it to where the buffer/ bolt can't travel all the way back, and essentially short strokes the gun. To make it work you would either cut the screw down, or buy an a1 stock screw.
Here it is from Brownells, a Colt a1 stock screw 3$:

Here's an A1 screw next to an A2 screw.

You definitely need to use the correct screw.

Btw, you can shorten the A2 screw.  They are the same diameter and thread pitch.

If you want a A1 specific kit from Brownells here is one I recently installed with no problems.

That stinks!  I specifically asked the Brownell's chat person for an A1 buffer tube.  At least, I'm pretty sure I did.  I assumed it was an A1/A2 kit with parts for both.  Gah!

Btw, you can shorten the A2 screw. They are the same diameter and thread pitch.

I think I will do that.  Can someone tell me the overall length of the A1 screw?  If not, it looks like about 10 threads will do.

Edit:  Looks like they are .562" long (A1 screw).

Just measure the thickness of the A2 buttstock spacer, and cut that much off the screw. You'll be good to go.
