Yes, the barrel should be cylindrical.

You could have a longer barrel cut down, but it needs to be a carbine length gas system and pencil (lightweight) profile. A rifle barrel  or m4 barrel wouldn't work.

For my XM177E2 build, I had a 16 inch Colt SP1 Carbine barrel cut down.

The original XM177E2 barrels did not have the tapered step behind the threads.

The XM177E2 had an 11.5 inch barrel, this is measured the face of the bolt while locked in the chamber to the end of the muzzle of the barrel.

just another question .......i have find out that the xm177e2 receiver i have , says "5.56 mm " , shouldn`t the bbl be 1/7 since 5.56 bullets stabilize in 1/7 bbls ?

maybe i am confused with the 5,56 ss109 round ??

was the  xm177 e2 ever manufactured with a 1/7 bbl twist ?

thanks !

XM177E2 had a 1/12 twist.

55gr 5.56 is the standard.

1/7 twist is more modern than retro, and is optimized for 62gr 5.56.

Yes 5,56 is the the 62 grain SS109 round you're thinking of, however the original 5,56 was a 55 grain projectile designated M193. It predates the SS109 round developed by FN by a minimum of 15 years.
