Well, a while back I worked on my 605 to get it shooting. There were a lot of things that were not quite right on it. I've been collecting correct detail parts while I waited for an NSD partial lower. JT did the barrel work for me. The scope is an old 3x20 Colt. Take a look and let me know what you think. Oh yea, please excuse my poor attempt at photography...

Excellent build. We'll never see one in Hawaii as our state prohibits SBRs....

Those are not SBR's if done right. They get cut down to just under 16" then have the prong  flash hider  pin and welded to bring it right to 16" long barrel.

This is correct, the three prong is pined and welded in place to make it a 16 inch barrel.

Looks fantastic! Great job. Also, the photos are great - if you think they suck, then you've never seen my sorry ass photos... Great job on the photography and background as well!

Holy smokes, that is a beautiful carbine you've got there! Let us know how she shoots! I've got to think that that particular configuration would work wonders in .300BLK given its optimization for shorter barrels.

That's a damned good looking carbine.  Outstanding job!

Really nice.  I have a buddy working on one.  We're trying to find original serial number ranges for the 605.  Anyone?

Thanks for the kind words guys. I should be sighting both the irons and scope this weekend. I'll let you all know.

Did the gas port need to be resized in order to get reliable operation?  I wonder if John Thomas can do this?
Link Posted: 2/15/2017 5:26:59 PM EDT
[#23]
Pretty sure Professor Thomas can do it. He's pretty much omnipotent.

My understanding is that the over sized port was only needed to improve reliability in cold weather.

I live in Florida and "Florida Cold" aint all that cold. I PROBABLY won't need to open it up.

I may have it opened up just to be on the safe side but IIRC the bigger port was only needed in knee deep snow and subzero temps which are both unlikely in central Florida.

Anyone else remember that about opening the gas port?

As John does the shortening, pinning and welding, he opens up the port. I have shot the upper before and it works perfect.

Well, I live in Alaska, so I'll probably need the gas port resized......

John opens the gas hole to .110 I believe. Yesterday I fired probably 150+ rounds at the range through my 605 JT finished up for me a couple years ago. Brass went into a organized pile at the 4 o'clock position. No failures what so ever...... the 605 is a great tool! I've never had a "winter" issue either. Keeps on plugging reliably.

Years and years ago, in a land far, far away with a name that no longer exists, two bored G.I.'s with access to a somewhat less than secure arms room containing a few M16's that were "mavericks" (that's a weapon not on the unit's property books), and a hacksaw, whacked the barrel off one of the mavericks just forward of the front sight.  And, installed it on a CAR-15 lower, just to see what would happen.  The contraption ran like a sewing machine.  I suppose if we'd had easy access to a machine shop, we might have threaded the barrel for a flash suppressor, but we didn't think about that until later.

Couple-three caveats to the story.

It was a relatively warm climate some might describe as "sweltering".

I have no firm recollection whether the CAR-15 we used as a donor for the lower was an E1 or an E2.  Don't think I knew the difference in those days.

And that's an unsubstantiated example of one.  Another result may vary.

Took it to the indoor range today. 25 yards, 55 grain. First target is with irons, 2, 3 shot groups. 2nd set was after a front post adjustment down. It shot very well. Second was with the scope. 5 shot group. I did fine tune it later in the session.
