Here are the two best photos that I have found of Air Force 11 1/2" barrel carbines showing both marking varieties: GAU.-5/A/A and COMMANDO.  Does anyone have any better photos of either of these varieties?  As you can see, both of these photos are pretty poor. Also, does anyone know which is more common?  Lastly, if you could only build one of these varieties, which would you build and why? Thanks for your input.

I've never seen a Commando in any of the current conflicts; a fair number of GUUs, mostly carried by EOD guys and JTACS in staff/support positions.

Also seen commercial "M-16A1" markings, like on a pre86..

GAU-5/A/A would be more common, and has more historical background. I am building one myself. Already have the Braceman lower done with the correct markings, as seen in first image. Only thing "wrong" with mine is the use of a powder-coated buttstock, and the SP1 large hole upper.

Any pics of the other side?

OP, I'd do the Commando if I actually did the engraved clone thing as they are a little harder to find IMO and less of them but heck do one of each.  You have a couple of the barrels and going to send them off anyway.

I would think Brace would have the correct artwork already and I don't have pics.

Brennan very, very nice and thank you for sharing. I'd also like to see a pic from other side if no trouble.  Wondering if CH wasn't replaced during it's lifetime being a little darker?

the gun actually gets shot, so i replaced it with other parts that arent original to the gun. Ill see what i can do per the other side. I have an XM16E1 and XM177E2 if anyone needs those markings. Like i said, everything is legit transferable factory MG's.

Brennan;

I would LOVE to see a couple pictures of your GAU as well (both sides).  Thanks.

For anyone who is interested, here are the best photos that I have managed to come up with:

Brennan,   Nothing but awesome!  Thanks so much for sharing those.  All are real sweeeeet!  I'm going to assume the mini is legit?  Wow!  I could really get into that one.  That could dent my ammo stash. I believe that's the nicest piece of living room furniture I've ever seen.

GM also works for me, although shorties are nice,  really not my thing.   I'd probably put a rifle upper on it.  Clones are alright but nothing like the real deal no matter how many coins one throws at them.

A GE M134 fires @ 6600 RPM, so yeah, at about .50 a round without a link, it can be a expensive endeavor.

They were used, as well as XM177E2s, in El Salvador. The US supplied the government forces with a shitload of M16s in various configurations. Mostly A1s, but definitely some 11.5" carbines.

The USAF probably still has a few in inventory; they definitely deployed some early on in GWOT.
ETA; I realized the pic I posted was not a GAU/GUU.

Our Air Force weather team in 1/10th SFGA in Germany had GAU-5 updated to M4s.  Lower receivers were crossed stamped several times.  This was as late as 2003.

As I remember, one was even a partial fence, and they were set up as 727s.

I'm in the USAF Security Forces and I carried a GAU-5 off and on between 2001-2003 then again in 2007-2008.  The last one I saw was in 2010 before they were taken off our books.  They were all a mish mash of parts and markings.  I do remember alot of X's all over the recievers where they'd been changed out over time.  I couldn't keep it straight but then again it was just what the armorer handed me to use.

I took that first pic in 2005. Send me your e-mail address and I can send you a better pic.

Issued a Gau5a/a 2006, Engineer attached to USAF SF. Then 2009 issued GUU's pencil barreled till 2011, and m-4 barreled till about the middle of 2012, where M-4s replaced everything. Id rather have kepth the GAU/GUU. Much easier to carry, and just (seemed) less to fail. That, and knowing my father probably carried one 40 years earlier than me.
