Would the GAU-5/A marked lower receiver always have a half fence, never have a half fence or known to have either?

Many thanks

The GAU-5/A was a series of rifles og different models being bought by the .mil starting in the late 60"s all the way up until the adoption of the M4.

Find the exact model within the gau family and start from there.

read it all.  make coffee; you'll be there a while.

Could have even had a 601 lower- the AF didn't waste anything. Lots of mutts built at support level.

Beautiful thing about the AF rifles and carbines is you can build one with all your left over parts and still be "correct"!

Like Morg said, they didn't waste a thing!

This!  I had a GAU-5/P (14.5" 1/12 pencil barrel) on a 601 or 602 push pin lower.  I also had a 12.5" GAU-5/A/A, and it had a full fence lower.

Yep, last time I looked at the AFTO for them (2012),it had language to the effect of "Numerous combinations of upper receivers and barrels may be found" then went to list barrel lengths by NSN. It also said all new replacements should be with the gov profile 14.5. looks like an M4 but with rifle ramps. All of the lowers I saw were re stamps, or just built and not re-stamped. I even saw quite a few on Commercial M16 lowers not marked US Prop.

I saw 14.5 pencils on A2 and A1 uppers going into OEF as late as 2012.

I actually have a Colt A2 upper with the recess for the detent. It's tied to my Nodak 601 lower at the moment, waiting to become a pistol.

I sent a nodak 80% to Braceman to be marked GAU-5/A and to be shaved to half fence so it looks like I am Ok.

I was just double checking.

Thanks to all.

I'm curious if any of the 649s, the GAU-5A/A, had the partial fence lower or if it was only on early GAU-5As.  For my retro build I'd like to do a GAU-5A/A.  I think it'd be cool oto use an earlier style lower if it would be correct.

As I said in my post, my USAF issue GAU-5/P had a 601 slab side lower.  Literally, any retro combination is correct.  That's why we call them USAF Franken-Carbines.  The recycle everything.  We even had a few M16s with 603 uppers in the armory.

In fact my SP1 Carbine clone looks just like my Gau-5/P, except my carbine has a 16" barrel to be legAL, and the GAU-5/P I was issued had  a 14.5" pencil barrel.

I'm looking at doing a GAU-5A/A, though, or where those similarly mixmasters after a time? I also want to do the markings, so I want to go with only a receiver type that would have been marked as that model type.

My GAU-5/A/A had a factory stamp.  My GAU-5/P was a 601 (or 602) with GAU-5/P hand stamped on it.

They did that to converted GAU-5A/As as well; I've seen pictures of those.
