Well, I have a thread to document the SP1 Carbine cloning effort using an SP1 Upper, Colt 1/7 6420 pencil barrel, and NDS601 lower. As luck would have it, as Harlan was shipping my 601 lower, I obtained another 601 lower from a gracious forum member at cost!  Wow, this place rocks.  Thanks, Sergio!

Anyway, that made me decide to loose the A2 lower on my tack driver 604, and make it a 602 slick bottom instead. I went 602 instead of 601, because my furniture is too nice to paint green. Problem was, I had to get another SP1 upper, so the grey would match my 601 lower.  That caused me to sell off the 604 Fulton upper to fund the purchase of the second SP1 upper.

Fortunately, I found an early square forge SP1 upper with no forge codes, to put my pencil barrel back on.  then I needed to get a slick side chrome BCG for the 602, because a Nickel Boron M16a1 carrier just wouldn't do.  Thanks Boywonder777!  Then I ordered a triangle charging handle from NDS, and a 601 duckbill flash hider from Innovative industries, so it would be an early 602.  Now I need to do some parts modifying in the LPK

ARGHHHH!  This is an illness.  IT NEVER ENDS!

Awesome man! We will need pictures. So the early 602 rifles had duckbills? I've always wanted a 601 clone but I have a nice set of furniture that I'd hate to paint so I might do an early 602 also.

I know early 602s had triangular charging handles, and I would venture to say that Colt probably used up existing stocks of 601 duckbills, even after the officially changed the design to the standard 3 prong.  I know in other martial arms (M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, M14) the military contractors always used up existing stocks of items that had been upgraded or modified.  That's why a flat bot on a carbine that is early in the serial number block for round bolts is probably original.

As for my 602, I am going to modify a bolt catch to the early style with a dremel cut off wheel.  I might even try the grooves with a fine file.

I have thought about trying that myself before.

Look forward to seeing your pics. A few years ago, I did pretty much the same thing. I re-purposed a SP1 to build a 602 clone.

Rustoleum time!  I hit the receiver end of the rifle lower receiver extension with Rustoleum grey primer.  Didn't worry about the whole tube, since it dowesn't show.  The PSA mil-spec CAR tube is a nice matte hard coat really dark grey.  I hit the whole tube with Rustoleum, even though it is not that nuch lighter.  Also did the trigger guards for both builds with Rustoleum.  The were PSAs and were also already a matte charcoal grey.  I have a XM grey charging handle for the carbine build, courtesy of Sergio, but it was missing a latch.  Took a latch,  spring, and roll pin off a spare charging handle, and hit it with the Rustoleum also.  The 602 will have the grey triangle charging handle from Nodak.

OK, my square forge SP1 upper and Colt FCG are waiting at my office.  I'll pick them up tomorrow when I go to work.  I'll be able to put the faux-602 upper together.  Can't pick up my pair of 601 lowers until Tuesday the 22nd because of 10 day jail at my FFL.  Of course I could pick it up Sunday, but he is closed Sundays and Mondays! LOL.  I hate waiting.  It is not my strong suit!

Yep 602s are awesome! It's my new obsession build. I can't wait to get mine together. Those Special Forces advisors seemed to have a lot of them. So they look to be correct with either a triangle charging handle or a modern one. They also appear to not all be angled behind the carry handle? Might have to procure a waffle magazine as well. Pic for motivation!

Sadly, I sold my waffle when money was tight when I was off for shoulder surgery.  Maybe Mike and Harlan will do another run????  (hint, hint)

With the talented group of retro machinists and metal workers in here I wouldn't think it would be that difficult.

Here's the upper half:  Colt SP1 upper, Colt 601 Bolt Carrier with AIM Nickel Boron bolt (too cheap to get an original chrome bolt!), NDS 601 triangular charging handle, Innovative Industries 601 "Duckbill" flash hider (so close they mark them with an "I" to prevent fraud), a NOS USGI flat slip ring assembly, and an AR15Sport.com 1/9 twist barrel so I can shoot heavier stuff than M193.  I have even shot MK262 MOD1 77s, and they were 1 to 1.5 MOAish to 200 yards.  Also it is wearing a beautiful, mint set of USGI triangular handguards that were new in the wrapper.

I have everything for the lower, including Colt FCG.  I am using a standard USGI red wine buffer, though, as I am also too cheap to buy an Edgewater!  It is just a shooter, after all.  Just waiting for my NDS 601 lower to get out of Californication 10 day jail.

Officially yes, as there were also supposed to come with standard charging handles.  In reality, we know Colt used up existing triangular charging handles that were in stock on new 602 production, as all martial weapons producers do - especially when the weapons are not yet "official issue."  I am sure that they probably did the same with flash hiders.  Besides, it is only a "replica" rather than a strict "reproduction," and I like duckbills better! LOL

WW2 M1 Carbine builders were notorious for using up existing stocks, even after the changes were specified.  Carbines that technically should have had a round bolt, for example, would be produced with flat bolts until the flat bolts were all gone.  The War Department did not want to waste good parts they already paid for!

601 bolt catch, dimple mag catch and many circles button. Milled chrome FPRP. dimpled rear take down, sight screw. Also would like to find a nice shinny good condition L no drain hole with all its teeth. Oh and I have a fat head firing pin on the way! Oh and a waffle mag. Would also like to get a real cast colt FSB.

Well, some pictures of the finished faux-602 build.  Pardon the delay and the terrible indoor flash pictures.  We are having the wettest, coldest November in over 50 years in Northern California, and I haven't had a decent day since the parts came in.  Also, my internet is sh*t because of a defective broadband receiver/modem they just installed in the tree, and it takes an hour to upload one picture to photobucket!.

My original 602 upper is also rounded for a standard charging handle.  I've always just figured it was a later model.  I'll post a pic after I take one...I've had all the parts, including Edgewater, chrome BCG, original upper and upper parts, NDS lower and lower parts, and 602 furniture for years.  Maybe now I'll be motivated to assemble it...

I have to quantify this - the barrel did not come with the upper, so it's not original.  I have an M VP barrel on it, reasonably period-correct for a late 602, as I understand it or rationalize...
