I said i would never build a 601, well i gone and done it
I want to thank 37guy for the painting my stocks.
Thanks to Trimdad for the help with the Norells on the upper and lower.
I used all repro or surplus parts for this 601. No real 601 parts were used at all.

Looks great! Those 601's are really nice looking rifles. And one of the ones I keep telling my self I can't afford to build. See how long I keep listening.

Freaking awesome, that is my dream build. If I could only have one, a 601 would be the one. I hope to put one together someday with all repo parts so I won't feel guilty about abusing it. Congrats on a build of my favorite retro.

You do damn nice work, old son!  Very few people would recognize that as a repro without taking a very close look.

I gotta admit--when the overall rifle looks that good, the engraved lower really finishes off the whole package.  I may have to consider swapping a couple lowers on my clones!

That looks great!
Awesome job on the distressing and overall look.

I can almost make out the + mark under the ejection port. Is that a Nodak lower?

US mil issed: yes. Commercial and export models: no.

Was discontinued in favor of dyed black furniture with the introduction of the second model AR15, the model 602 in the fall of 1963.

That is very nice. I hope to come close
I have all the parts except the grenade sight and I still need to find some one who can engrave the 80% lower.
Where would some one find the grenade sight?

Braceman who built this beautiful rifle does the engraving on 80% lowers. He does great work at a great price. Just make sure you don't mill it out before engraving, he only works on 80% lowers.

+10 or so I have a lot of his stuff in the safe, he also does re-profiling . He may even be able to help you with the sight.  Not sure if he still does them. I hoped Id see one in his pics as I could use one myself.

Edit: I guess I don't see to good... email to John inbound

Thanks guys
It is built on a Nodak 80% lower. I had the have the little + on the right side.
The front sight base is a Olympic cast .
Barrel is a Green Mountain 1/12
The upper is a M231 upper that i cut the rear sight pocket and gave it the 601 makeover.
The bolt carrier is a Colt full round carrier with a new chrome bolt Fulton armory.
I got the mag release and the bolt catch from John Thomas.
I made the grenade leaf sight and the rear sight wheel.
And i did the engravings.

So what did you do to make the Olympic fsb work on the .625 barrel?

I never knew the Olympic FSB's were cast. Do they come in .625?

Thanks for the replies. Great looking 601!
