I'm trying to figure out which one I want to build. At first, I thought I wanted a GAU, because NONE of my AR's are slick sided, and I figured that would be a neat departure.
But then I realize that the US Army used the M177E2, and for Army pride, I was thinking I should do the MX177. Help me out here. These are tough decisions. First world problems. |

Do the Army XM. I just finished a GAU-5 for much the same reason (I was USAF).

Where do you guys get the vinyl acetate stock and tube set? Also are there any vendors for slab lowers other than nodak spud?

View Quote Unless you can source an original Colt vinyl acetate aluminum stock for a decent price, Essential Arms is the place to go for the stock body. Nodak Spud has the correct 2-position buffer tubes. You will need the old style castle nut. Nodak Spud used to have them on their website, but they are not there now. You could probably call them and ask about it. |

Quoted: Slickside XM177? View Quote Then it wouldn't be an XM177. I'm not doing a E1 because you cannot get a proper moderator, which you'd want on a 10" barrel to make sure you have reliable function. So it's going to be an E2 if that's the route I go. I'm pretty sure I need to do the XM177 because of being former Army. |

As soon as I leave this commie state, the first thing I'm going to do is apply for a tax stamp! |

You mentioned the army used the xm177. I never hear about what the marines used. What did they use primarily? I'm guessing just xm16e1's and m16a1's?

Well, your Army pride would still be intact with a GAU-5. That's the gun they took to Son Tay.

XM117..............I am thinking of either one at the moment, and as much as I like the GAU-5, I like the XM-177 a little more.............of course, I might change my mind again

First the 607 parts, and now two more, maybe three, if the Colt M16A1 is hard to come by or super expensive. I have been watching for normark singlepoint scopes on ebay. Who knows how long that will take. |

XM177 is slick side upper with 10" barrel XM177E1 is forward assist upper with 10" barrel XM177E2 is forward assist upper with 11.5" barrel As far as I know the XM177 was only an air force carbine. The USAF didn't believe in the need for a forward assist so they had the slick side upper with the 10" barrel (XM177) and designated it as the GAU-5/A. The XM177E1 was the forward assist army version and was stamped COMMANDO. It was identical to the GAU-5/A except for the forward assist. The E2 was army issue and used the 11.5" bbl. From what I've read on this, many E1s were rebarrelled and armorers over stamped the 1 with a 2. Of course over time carbines were repaired and parts mixed up a bit so there's some confusion, especially with the USAF guns. They have a few different designations over time as parts were swapped out as policies changed over the years. Anyway, this is what I believe to be correct. If I'm wrong please advise. |

XM177 (R610) and XM177E1 (R609) are the same except for the forward assist.
XM177E2 (R629) and GAU-5A (R630) are the same except for the forward assist. Except for the Son Tay raid, if there's no forward assist, it's USAF only. |
