Well, I finally decided to take on another retro project. It's been a few years in RBRD remission, been building FALs and other stuff, but once again I have the itch.

I have decided to build my first title II firearm, a 733-ish 11" Israeli carbine. It will be built will all natural BFPU parts, and will be built on one of my GM Hydramatic clone lowers.

Still on the fence as to what barrel to use. Ideally I would like to find a 20" M16 barrel and have it converted like the IDF did with their rifles, but it may be cost prohibitive, the barrel work alone is over $200. So I may end up just using a carbine barrel cut to around 11". But still want to keep it all retro USGI, so therein lies a bit of a dillema.

Here's what I have so far, already have some small bits not pictured, and a few on the way. Still have to file the form 1, so not in a huge rush for the barrel and other parts, but still constantly looking.

Big thanks to boywonder777 for this beautiful BFPU upper!

Very nice , one of those new brownells 1/12 barrels in 12.5 would do it justice . Not original but it is 1/12 twist. I ended up going with a sp1 carbine barrel , there are a few on gunbroker right now.

Here's a real one that belongs to a friend of mine in Europe.  The handguard cap slides both ways on the barrel because there is no shoulder.  They took M16A1 barrels and cut them down at the gas port, so this one has a 13" pipe, no shoulder for the flash hider. The cut a .625 journal for the CLGS, drilled a port, re-pinned the FSB, and got carbine parts from the US.

Awesome!! Thanks for the pics.

That was my initial plan for the barrel, having it converted true to the IDF spec. However, I think I may have found my barrel. Still waiting on final confirmation, but I think I have a 10.5" in the pipline.....giggity.

11.5" carbines are my all-time favorite. Great start!

A few more bits added.

Confirmed my barrel purchase today too. It's a cut down Colt 1:12 carbine barrel. Looks to be around 11"-11.5". Couldn't be more perfect and I got it for less than the projected conversion cost, so I am one happy retro head today.

Will you be happy with it if you use the carbine barrel? If not, you know what you must do... awesomeness be upon you.

Yes, I think I will be satisfied. Barrel is cut to what looks like a non-standard length, which screams Menusar. It's also a 1:12 retro Colt barrel, and 1:12 is a major factor for me. Short of spending $400+ on a 20" USGI barrel conversion, this is as good as it gets.

No .... not an A2 port-door.  I've got a rusty A1 port cover that I'd be happy to drop off in the mail for you

Lol, I was wondering when someone would point that out. I have a pile of them and figured it could be a placeholder till I found an A1. Plus the wear looks good.

Thank you for your offer, message inbound!

Cool project…

There are SP1 carbine uppers floating around, that might be the path of least resistance?  Worst case, you'll have to retap the gas port after chopping the barrel...but you have all the other parts going for you, all the way down to the six hole hand guard.  The SP1 stripped upper is an easy sell.

Have to admit, I am a bit dumbfounder by the KNS anti-rotation pins.  I could possibly buy their use if the lower has seen heavy extensive use and HTS poles are elongated.  If that is the "pitch," the A2 dust cover should do just fine (use whatever is on hand to keep the old goat running).

Got my barrel in. Looks to be a cut down SP1 carbine barrel. 1:12 twist, gorgeous bore, length is around 10.75"-11", has a weird pinned long FH so it is legal as it sits. Not sure if I will leave the FH till the form 1 goes through or dremil it off to see the threads and crown. I don't have any stripped lowers at the moment so I may take it off.

Here's a quick mockup.
