I'm personally not happy with the shape of the rear sight wings I made. any input? I'd like to get as close to the original as possible

It's a water proof chamber plug. Meant for seals, often the gun would be under water, so they wold place a chamber plug and a shoot through silencer plug. Rack the slide to chamber a fresh round and fire.

I just saw a picture of my slide cut with the slidelock installed and it is outstanding! !!!! now the slide just needs to have the rear sight wing replaced and be refinished in black.i should have everything done by the end of the month. I am Pumped! !!!!

This is a cool project, I have a 39-2 and an early model 59, they really are interesting American 9mm pistols and were a result S&W's pursuit to provide military and police weapons - they are good quality for the day.

I heard from one of the guys involved in a "Hush Puppy" reproduction project, today (he's not a member here). He said things are progressing well, and he'll have a completed pistol and fake suppressor done very soon. He sent me some pictures... looks pretty cool.

Something I found online in a person's Photo account: Drawings of the USAF slide on suppressor tested against the Hush Puppy on the Beretta. The slide lock was a feature built into the slide and suppressor itself. A rail was added to the frame and the suppressor slide onto the rail and not the barrel.......

Good on you for sticking to making the Hush Puppy......

I played with one of the M9 versions while doing OPFOR. The slide lock is double sided, and the supressor itself is made by KAC>

I think the drawing is the one that Beretta and the USAF designed. Knight's was more simplified and sturdy......basically an empty tube with wipe pack in the front.....but really quiet! I would like Knight's slide lock better but I think the Air Force was originally looking for a slide on/off slide lock for survival mode for downed pilots.

Colt lost the contract for that pistol but the silencer was made by Reed Knight and they did like that, and ended up using the Colt/knight silencer with the HK pistol IIRC

I like the Hush Puppy - I have a S&W 39-2 and an early production 59. I really like these American Early "Wonder Nines"

What I don't understand is why for a gun that is to be quiet as possible - Why did the project use 9mm instead of 45ACP?

I'm not arguing 45 vs 9mm,( know 9mm is fine) but from a standpoint of subsonic ballistics, I would think the 45acp would have made sense for a slower projectile and one less hurdle in a project. I know one can make 9mm subsonic,

Curious if you historians know the program well enough to know why this platform was chosen.

When the SEAL were commissioned by John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1962, they immediately started looking at any American-made weapons they could find, including the original Colt AR-15s and the S&W 39. They liked both, especially the 9mm caliber of the 39,since 9mm is more readily found overseas. Since they adopted the Model 39, it was logical to modify the 39 into the Hush Puppy...

While surfing the web for information on the hush puppy pistol, i came accross the Super vel website which are now selling the same 147 grain 9mm ammo that they sold back in 1967 to the Navy. Now if only we could find the original holster maker.
