Looks like this is not anodizing?  More of a coating?

definitely not anodizing, but supposed to be tough.

never used it. lots of others have.(usually over anodized parts, for the color)

it's a option, how much money will you save?

see, if they were barrels or uppers or handguards you wouldn't blink.

it's all just part of it.

don't do everything at once, we all have multi year if not DECADE builds.

I can honestly say from experience that to use Johns coatings you MUST have the aluminum anodized first. It IS NOT a replacement for the type 3 hardcoat. It will scratch and flake off if put over an 80% lower. So with that said if you want to match the color to your upper I STRONGLY suggest that you use his product and coat both. Once the surface is anodized you will be able to color it to match upper and lower with his coatings. I have tried to do 80% lowers and it comes out ok for a while then wears off. However on an anodized lower (what ever the base color is) It sticks to anodizing 100% of the time as long as you follow the prep and coating instructions by the letter. I have had great success with the coating on anodized lowers of various makes but not so much on 80%'s no mater what I did to prep the surface.

Below, one is an 80% lower anodized black, the other is a palmetto armory anodized black, uppers are Colts and factory anodized. Can you tell me what one is what? Both Lower pieces have Norells Gray flat applied

Below is an upper and lower coated together with Norells both Anodized before hand

I had two uppers done by John at Norrells, took a while, but they came out pretty nice, no long term
wear studies though.  I might have him do my AR10A2?

I'd imagine a custom ceracote would be a good avenue, though I can't recall the colors to use

Anodizing would be 1st choice, but US anodizing is so expensive.
