Still playing with the shorty when I have time and I decided to ditch the VZ-58 stock and put on an original 180B butt stock.

I love it. Handles well and I hope to get a range report soon.

Weighs in at about 6.5 lbs.

Rick the change over to the AR-180B stock makes it look like the "original" shorty which is my favorite.

I finally did something about the hand guards and I was surprised that it went so well.

I made a new outside retainer today. All by eye on my manual mill.

I kept putting it off thinking I could only do it on a CNC machine.

Now to get some range time.

You can just send it along with my next NDS-18S.

You did remember to send it out for anodizing, right?

Rick, are you going to make that second AR-180B another AR-180S ?

That would be Cool, having a matched set.

Well done. You made the handguard cap by hand? You have skill.
You really need an AR180 original lower with folding stock to finish the build.

I came across a stripped 180B upper some time back and I am using this upper to correct some of the mistakes I made with my first build.

I came across a cheap HBAR barrel and I knew then that I had to build another SBR upper.

I stripped the extension and screwed it into my upper and made sure headspace was going to be ok. Then stripped the front sight base and cut it off behind the gas port with my porta band.

Put it in the steady rest and faced it then used the live center and started the profile. I wanted to emulate what I thought Armalite would have done if they made a 180B pistol/SBR.

Here it is between my first SBR upper and a full size AR-180B

And the main reason for the changes. I came across an original AR-18S lower hand guard and discovered that my reverse engineered from pictures barrel was too short.

Still needs some stuff to finish it up but I hope to make some more progress next week when I get back to town.

Wow - nice. I try not to click on this thread because it just makes me pant heavily and drool

One of the very first things I am planning once we depart CA (counting down the years/hours...>3 years ) will be to enroll in a machining class and buy a lathe/mill. One benefit to owning a house in So Cal is watching it appraise in value far,far beyond what we will need to relocate. My better half has her requirements in a new place and I have mine...starting with a real sized shop and not the 10x20 shed I now have.

That brings to mind a question I've been thinking about lately, can those in California own AR-180B's?

Could they build a gun on a NDS-18S lower?

Could you build an upper from scratch using square tubing?

Ok that was more than one question. ??

Could be built on NDS receiver.  However, would need a bullet button, barrel would need to be 16 inches (no SBR's), and overall length would need to be 30 inches is shortest configuration.
