For my first attempt at anodizing I used Rit Pearl Grey as my dye. Obviously not the best of choice. For my next attempt I will use a quality dye.
I am happy that other than dye issues the process went well.

Hey, that's the way to learn!  Fail until you succeed!
When you do come up with a good recipe and process for "Colt Grey," be sure to share the detailed info!

Looks like it would actually be a pretty interesting effort.

Thanks, I will. I did some research on the rit dye I used and many people were complaining it turned their clothes .etc purple, so I think I'll get better results with a quality dye. I'll just need to time it right so that it doesn't get too dark.

On the HKpro forums people would add green to black to prevent purple on the plastic guns

If you wouldn't mind please post pictures of your anodizing setup.  I've got more than 6 80% lowers that I want to do.

Just seeing the setup makes me really want to try this!
Where did you find your basic info, and (aside from the color), what's been the biggest challenge so far?

I ended up with just the result I desired. It's pretty tough too, I took a wire brush too it and all it seemed to do was polish it a little. I shouldn't have any trouble getting a darker look if I desire, but I wanted this to have faded look to match the receivers. After I anodize the delta ring and buffer tube I'll post a complete build thread.
