I cannot give you the serial number that the contracts started with (yet) but from my research I can give you confirmed M16E1 serial numbers.

The earliest one I have is SN 10583 which was used in bore evaluation testing at Springfield Armory.

Next lowest number is SN 108860 which was also used in these tests.

You could check the posted dates for 603's circa 1965 in the M16 info top of page - it should help get you into the right range.

I am aware of the SN lists, there are several out there that seem to be in conflict with each other. I was curious as I have not been able to confirm an XM16E1 below SN 100,000. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, just curious.

Wait I just found this:

Slabside lower, 601 front pin..... XM16E1????? Oh no...... I hope it wasn't an early production variant.......
