I've been considering creating a topic for all of us that have built or are considering building a model 605 style build.  This could be a good learning topic to gather information for those thinking about building one of these unique rifles.

I'll start this out with my dedicated 22LR 605 style build.  Here's the specifics:

* NDS XM lower with BFPU finish provided by Mike at NDS
* NDS 605 style upper with BFPU finish provided by Mike at NDS
* CMMG dedicated 22LR 20" "government profile" barrel.  Sent to John Thomas for barrel work, removal of FSB bayonet lug and installing FSB
* CMMG dedicated 22LR chrome conversion kits with chrome collar
* Black Dog Machine (BDM) 15 round 22LR magazine with the appearance of the retro 20 round magazines
* DOD acceptance stamp from ARFCOM user (I believe it's  morris with some numbers)
* My version of faux brown bakelite with green paint.  Plus I added the wear patterns

The good thing about using a dedicated 22LR barrel is with the machined chamber extension, you are able to use a "non-pinned" flashider and maintain legal barrel length requirements without the need of an NFA tax stamp.

Nice 605 and other great looking rifles as well.

I just had one of my 605 projects out for a blast from the past during the 3-day, 2-night Multi-gun course I ran down in Price, UT.  We had a wide spread of everything from 11.5" SBR's, to 24" Grendel's, with everything in between.  After the first day of close quarters marksmanship on the LE range, where they have movers and turners, I encouraged the attendees to switch around blasters with each other and get some ideas as to what they might be missing.  At that time, I broke out the 605 and gave a little bit of history behind it, explaining that it was the first production carbine in the AR15 family, then handed it off to see how it shoots.

It ate XM193 just fine, and no hiccups.  I'm using a .094" gas port from the 20" barrel that was cut down.  I wanted to see if it would run before gassing it up anymore.  Weather was pretty hot, so we'll see how she does this winter. My very good friend ran some 75gr BTHP's through it as well, and it was POI for POA for him on steel.  Not sure what it looks like on paper, since it's a 12" twist, but I wouldn't want to get hit by it either way.

Biggest thing I don't like is the sproing that seems to be prominent only in rifle length extension tubes for me.  I don't notice it in my carbines, but it was very pronounced with the 605.  I'm thinking JP SCS for it, since mine will all be sleepers that externally look like a purist's gun from the side, but will use some modern developments in critical areas.  This particular 605 has an original 1963 or earlier bolt carrier, and I even have one of the original firing pin retaining pin designs, which makes me appreciate the cotter pin improvement a lot.

How so? I have several rifles with the original type of FPRP, and have not noticed any issues, but haven't run any 3 gun matches with them either. The sproing you describe is mildly annoying to annoying at times, and definitely more noticeable on some than others.

Nice rifles. I have some parts, but haven't started the build yet. I want a .22 605 and a .223 605. Both!

In on the thread.

Blasphemous I know but I'd really like to build a pair of 605's in .556 and 7.62x39...... just haven't figured out the specifics pertaining to the 7.62 round and the 605 design.

How well does the cmmg 22 barrel setup work? I'm thinking about using one for a build.

Whenever I remove the BCG and tilt it to the left side, the FPRP drops out with gravity.  It's an after market part, but I can see why they went to the cotter pin.

originals were splayed a little more and stayed in place.  the aftermarket ones don't have that splay but you can carefully spread them a little with a butter knife.  originals were also prone to breakage.

They are fragile, I used a small flathead screwdriver on a chrome original and was praying it wasn't gonna break.

Yeah, I guess I forgot the issues with one or two FPRPs I have had. I actually had one that featured little nubs on the split end that helped hold it in place. But as LRRP points out, they are not perfect. Broke one early on trying to spread it.

For some reason I just like the looks of them more than a cotter pin. YMMV.

This. Harder to get out on mine. The cotter pin is a much superior design, and simpler, cheaper to replace...My Xm16E1 is the only AR I own using the old style FP retainer.

That's kinda what I have in mind for the future.  No need for gas port work with that one.

You just need a relief cut selector now, and an SOT.  I'm really wanting a 2 round burst feature for Close Quarters Marksmanship.

Well, here you go. My 605 is finally together. The upper arrived from John Thomas today. He also refinished the dimple pins and drilled the selector. JT does some great work and his customer satisfaction is second to none. The FSB came from Stoner. It was intended for my 607 build, but I sent him the wrong one. I could not let all his hard work go to waist. If you get the chance to get anything he made you will be impressed. The lower was a virgin RGM pre ban full fence that I turned into a partial fence (sorry HipShot). Chrome BCG.
The finish looks a little darker in color in my crappy iPhone pictures then it is, but you get the idea. I have not shot it yet as I put it together today.

Is 1/2" worth $200 to you? I just had Heatnbeat pin my FH. If you want it to look correct AND are going to run a suppressor, then SBR it. Easier to just go 16" in that case however, and saves you $200 and the NFA weirdness when going state to state. I think pinning the FH is the way to go IMO. Mine wears a repro 601 FH BTW.

For me, pinning made sense. The measurements are the same, just can't unscrew the three prong. This 605 rifle has a different feel then any of my other rifles or carbines. Kind of the best of oth worlds.

What are the possibilities of leaving it the extra 1/2" in barrel length and putting 1/2" deeper threads into the flash hider to keep it legal? (or if not enough length, have a FH with a bit longer trunk
to accommodate)

I just re-did my 22LR for about the 5th time now.  (?)  I found this refinished, broken early XM16E1 receiver at a local show.  I cut the damaged part off at the bend and hammered it mostly straight.  I'm not able to have it welded right now, it is just held in there with super glue.  (We'll see how long that lasts)  Not all of the bend came out so I had to clearance it a little bit, after a very light bead blast painted it with Norrells.  Lower is a re-profiled A2 painted in Norrells, I need to re-park that ugly selector, the dedicated 22LR barrel ends up being just the right length for the 605 look.  I guess it needs a cotton sling now too.

ETA: It survived all 80 or so rounds of 22LR I had left, here it is with a cotton sling and I think I swapped out the selector.

That .22 605 looks great. Also really like the salvaged upper aspect to it. Recycle, repurpose, resuse.

Anyone ever try to "roll your own" 605 upper by milling off the FA bolster? Would require some filling I guess.

Yes I am "rolling my own".  I cut of the F/A bump, had it welded locally
and shipped it to Braceman for finally shaping.  I will post a pic when
I get it back before I coat it.
