What are the features making it rare?

Ok. I'll guess. Chromed key(round, half round?) and carrier, FA serations, large FP countersink ?

What else?

Probably the rarest BCG out there. They simply didn't make that many of them before they got the okay to switch to parkerized BCGs in '65. In comparison, many 601,602 and 604 chrome BCGs were already in service by that time. My concern is that people will start faking them.

If you look at all the old original carrier keys, they are all staked like that...unless it's been replaced/refurbed  It's a good way to tell if it's an original or a later replacement key. I've seen real keys done with looks like square and circle stakes on the top of the gas key. If you see enough of them you will see why they changed it to the side, no two look alike and are hastily done, as the side stakes all look the same and most definately is a better method/spot.

Your absolutely right, and I was gonna mention the exact samething, it wouldn't very hard to fake at all.

So the staking makes it special? "C" stamped or not?
Seriously, i'm trying to figure it out.

it's the hard chrome that makes it rare.  xm16e1 had a few different carriers.  chrome, parkerized w/o C stamp, parkerized w/ C stamp.  they all have an enlarged firing pin retaining hole on the right and have circle or square stakes on top.

The xm16e1 was the first model to use forward assist ,
So the combination of three things make it rare-
Forward assist notches/ chrome / large cam pin hole.
Really any chrome carrier would pass , but the large cam
Pin home is the dead giveaway as to it being original
Or not.

When I built mine I just used a rock river chrome carrier.
And like I said, the absence of the large cam pin hole
Is the giveaway. But I wanted to move on to the next project so
I'll probably get one eventually.

I don't think it would be hard to replicate one.
Take a modern carrier and widen the hole. But than you
You have to have it re chromed ,,, or stripped
And re chromed. I almost did this,, but I worried that a additional
Layer or chrome would throw it out of spec.
I'll try it one of these days.

Ha, anywhere I said " cam pin hole" above,,, I meant to
Say the firing pin retaining hole.

And those xm16 carriers are so rare and expensive
I decided to build a few projects as slab sides
So I could use 601 carriers which are easier to come by.
