OK, so having gathered up my "spare" parts, I have decided to build an Air Force carbine.  I am only short the Buffer Tube, Lower, and Barrel.
I have an IDF carbine (M4 barrel) and an XM177E2 with grenade ring.  Also have a 651 and 652 with pencil barrels.
So question as posed above, what barrel should I use?  I know much is personal preference but I am indecisive so looking for input.
Thanks

I built what I voted for.

Paid the $200 for a stamp too.

11.5" barrel and 4.5" will equal SBR not 16"+ Just a thought

Good point.  Maybe I should edit it to say 11.7" barrel.  Not sure I want to trouble with an SBR

Which model of carbine are you building? That has a lot to do with which barrel to use. If it is a GAU-5A,  it uses a 11.5" pencil barrel with a 4.5" moderator (SBR). If you are building GAU-5A/A, it uses a 14.5" pencil barrel with a 4.5" moderator w/ grenade ring.

You would really need to go with a 12.5"-12.75" barrel length. 12.5" barrel with a pinned and welded 4.5" moderator with grenade ring will give you about 16.1" OAL.

Voted for the oldie with the Brick moderator, but one of each, except that 16" M4, is okay.

I guess that is really my question.  I like to have variety since I know I can't expect to build EVERY model.  Its not like I am John Thomas, Riggs, Boywonder, or some other Retro insane guy!

Current carbines already include 2 with pencil barrel, one with moderator and grenade ring, and one with M4 14.5" barrel.  So if I wanted to go somewhat different, I could do the brick moderator with no grenade ring although I would do the 16.1 oal.   I guess the M4 barrel is different enough too.  So thats really the choice I think at this point.

Depending on the source...

GAU-5A is the 610, 10" barrel; 4.5" moderator or 630, 11.5" barrel; 4.5" moderator.
GAU-5A/A is the 649, 11.5" barrel; 4.5" moderator.

Those guns upgraded to a 14.5" barrel are GAU-5P.  If the twist is 1:7 then it's GUU-5P.  Both the GAU-5P and GUU-5P have been seen overstamped on GAU-5A, GAU-5A/A, XM177, XM177E1 and XM177E2.  Sky's the limit with the USAF carbine!

Build one of each. Duh. What'd you expect me to say?

EVERY time I try to use a M4 barrel for a fixed carry handle upper, I end up with 14.5" 653 or 723 barrels....and 603 604 or c7 uppers.....and I REALLY want a 727,........

True story.

If you are not stuck on the AF models and want to use a 14.5" M4 profile barrel, you may want to consider a late model 723 or a 727.

Late 723

727

Well, they used them too, so technically, unless the OP was going to engrave them, they WOULD be AF models. Combat controllers and PJs used quite a variety of weapons.

I did not know that.  On this build I already have a 604 upper so will be sticking with it.  I do like the 723 though - But I really CAN'T start any new builds!

So, what's this thing going to look like?? My XM177E2 clone has been under construction since 2008.
