Colt Commando circa 1945

That's a beautiful Commando, BigRix.  Obviously well-cared for, with just enough holster wear to show its age.
Any gov't markings on it?

No, unfortunately it's one of the later guns.

No martial markings.

While waiting for a can of powder at the local Cabelas, my 7 yo looking at the pistol case announces that he "likes revolvers best" despite the fact I put aside an unfired West Germany marked P228 a decade before he was born.  I can tell he will like retro things,

Thank you Sir. I have been inspired by the US of A and their guns for the past 35+ years.

Was about time I gave back something!

Did any of the VN US Property marked 1911s have a stainless steel finish ?  The photos in this thread that I have
seen seem to all be blued or blued with the finish worn off.

Not a chance.  The finish will either be dulite bluing or parkerizing.  These were all WW1 to WW2 contract pistols.

Now there were a lot of private purchase arms used during Vietnam, but stainless 1911s didn't make an appearance until the late 1970s on the commercial market.

Here's my 1911A1 paired with a Standard Products mix-master M1 Carbine.  I used them as duty weapons on my domestic security contract for Homeland Security (through the local utility) protecting the power grid in the mountains.  I did 350 miles a day (12 hour shift) patrolling dams, powerhouses, and transition lines in the high Sierra.  I did it for 18 months, but the long days and too many miles were too damn hard on my 62 year old a$$!  The last 6 months, I replaced the M1 with a 300 Blackout M4 AR15.  When I quit the contract, I sold off the 300 BLK stuff, as it cost too much to shoot. (I didn't like heavy cast lead loads, and only shot 115 Sierra Match Kings).

I found a link on gunbroker for a 1911 that is Nickel plated.  No idea if it is the original finish.  It is not stainless, but it does have that silvery finish.
I am guessing it would have been around by the VN war, but no telling if it was ever issued.  I wonder if there are more like this one, check it out:

That WAS a nice WWI M1911 (not M1911A1) but now it's an abortion and an eyesore and not worth HALF of what they're asking for it!

It WAS a beauty when it had it's original finish.

keeping it alive with a cross post of mine from the 1911 forum

Edit:So I picked her up today for $900 out the door so a little better deal than I expected even and I'm happy with her. More crappy iphone pics added

So my local shop called that they had a WW1 Colt they just got in and I went to look at it and then put money down on it. It's a 1918 with almost no finish and a very nice "HS" marked replacement barrel with what appears to be the original mag with almost no finish left on it either. No rust or pitting and roll marks are nice and crisp still.

They are asking $999 for it but will usually work with me on price. I do have a 1918 already that is all original and in better shape so should I buy this thing for $999? I'm a 1911 addict but prefer the WW2 guns over the pre-A1s. So talk me into or out of it. (Sorry for the crap photos)

Well, I would buy it, but I'm stupid. Value wise I have no idea, but that thing SPEAKS to me. You can't take $1000 with you in the coffin - I say buy it! Buy it NOW.

Hehe...it helps to spend lots of money at the same shop and pay cash

They actually called me about it when I was on vacation in Disney and I told them I wasn't going to be back for like five more days. They said no problem and put it aside for me until I got back. The owner of the shop went looking for it as he was going to sell it to a friend and the counter guy told him it was already sold. I also picked up that RPK .22 from them today as well that I posted the other thread about.

Don't know for sure, but it seems like an all original WWI Colt in that condition should go for way north of $1000.  Its virtual twin as far as condition lives at my house, and only gave $600 for it.

But, that was quite some time ago, and it had no magazine and the grips and barrel had been replaced.  Sourcing the correct mag with almost no finish left and grips with the appropriate wear narrowed that price gap a bit.  The barrel, still not worried about it.  She's a hateful old byotch, and will bounce empty cases off your noggin.

Guess that could be fixed, but why bother.  She seems to enjoy it.

I love that Mauser Hsc. Nearly bought one a few years back. They are very smooth (dehorned) and make a great pocket pistol. Very ergonomic too. (At least for me.) I put one in my book I liked it so much...

Yes, four digits made in 1914.

First owner was a family friend of a colleague of mine who bought it new after its production. The man took his own life with it many years later, I believe the 60's/70's or so and the pistol went into evidence for a while still soaked in blood (hence its finish), then after being returned to the family it was given to the colleague of mine who in turn traded it to me a few years ago after he tinkered with it for a while (WWII era sights, etc) When the pistol was found after the original owner committed suicide it held six cartridges in the magazine from 1917.

ETA: That enough back story for you?

How about a 1943 Colt M1911A1 (factory blued finish) Military Match Pistol.

According to the Colt Archives, this particular Colt M1911A1 was sent to the Commanding Officer of the Springfield Armory in February 1943. It is unusual because of the blued finish. Wartime M1911A1 pistols were parkerized-type finish. Later on in the late 1950s, it was converted to a Military Match Pistol. This is my second Colt I picked up from the estate of its former owner. I wish I had a complete history of this pistol, but I could only get information from Colt. The Springfield Armory Museum Archives department had no information on record. Not surprising since the pistol was for the Commanding Officer.

Thanks for the story BePhreed and sad but it's always nice to hear the back story on a historic gun like that, even when it's not all feel-goody

It's a nice gun and the condition is not as bad as I would have expected without the photos and going just from the story. Enjoy it and create a new and happier story for her.

This was taken of a Korean officer by my grandfather.

Odd harrington & richards... I'm not even sure what it's chambered in.

This was my great grandfathers and he was an officer in the cavalry here in AZ.

Some marks on it.

I couldn't get a good pic with my potato of this one.

Edit: I had one to many greats in the grandfather part...

Thanks man, I might get some ammo but I would be too scared to shoot it. The gun feels kind of flimsy I wouldn't trust it to hold together while shooting. I don't want to blow it up either. Maybe if I get it checked over by a gunsmith first?
