The pistol was on consignment at my local gunshop.  The owner was desperate for 9mm ammo.  This was about a year ago during the Obama gun buying frenzy.  I saw the little Colt and wanted to put it on Layaway.  He asked if I had any ammo to trade and I said yes.  He wanted 2 cases of 9 so the deal was done.    They were 100rd Win. Value Packs that he turned around and sold for $30 a box.  A year ago there was no ammo to be found locally anywhere.

Then I couldn't find .32 ACP anywhere for the longest time either.

The P-38 I bought 25 years ago from an old guy who had it in a cigar box, taken apart.  He didn't want anything to do with it.  He would have tossed it in the trash if I hadn't come along.

Here's my WWI Colt. She was built in 1918, and purchased by my grandfather from the DCM in 1959.
He gave it to me the year before he died.

And here is one of a couple deer I've killed with it.

I think the word "awesome"  is a good description of your post.  I bet you are proud, as I would be.  On all accounts.  What kind of ammo did you use to cull that baby and how far was she?

Thanks. I made the mistake of not picking up a Lahti, and a Steyr Hahn when they were more available (and affordable.) PPK? Actually, they've never done a whole lot for me. I make do with the Warsaw Pact knock-offs. However, I do have an old Beretta fetish.

I just picked up a really nice Browning hi-power clone.  It is an early made under license by FEG when the were using original drawings, and selling them to foreign contracts like Malaysia.  100% interchangeability with Browning, including the wood grips.  Later FEGs used slightly different design, and sucked.  Got it for $225, which is kinder to the unemployment than $650 and up for a Browning made one.  Picked it up.  Finish in 95+%, and really nice quality control.  Test fired it at the dealer's and it was dead on at 15 yards. 100 % function with FMJ and Speer Gold dot HPs.  Pice to follow.

BTW, Wally World (Walmart) has Federal 115 grn FMJ, brass cased for $11.97 a box.  Picked up 250 rounds for $60 for the Browning.  Best price I have found, without ordering online.  Only 50 cents more for on the shelf.  Shot great.

Scrolling back through this thread, I notice that Browning Hi-Powers are second only to 1911A1s.  I have always loved the Hi-power.  When I was 12 (1964), I got a Nakata Japanese pot metal non-gun Hi-Power that was so close, I later used the magazine from it in an Inglis Hi-Power I got 20 years later.  That was a great 9mm.  It was a tangent sight, slotted for a stock.  I picked up a "Man From Uncle" style collapsable stock for it and four 22 round magazines.  I had a foam fitted attache case that held everything (too much James Bond and Man From UNCLE when I was a kid). VERY sweet!  I later traded it for something else, and instantly regretted it.  That was about 20 ago and it took me this long to get another one.

An early government model; best I can figure is late 1913:

Colt M1903, .32 ACP, made in 1905, passed down from my great grandfather to me:

Browning Hi Power - built in 1945 just after the war for the Austrian National Police.

Here's a pair of nine's to draw (to).  The Hi-Power is the early FEG clone I just got.  The 469 S&W (1987 vintage) is my carry weapon.  Fired a pre-production sample of the 469 in the mid-80s while a rangemaster at a PD that already carried Smith 9mms.  Loved it ever since.  My camera sucks.  Will get pics later with my wife's Nikon D-90.

It's a civilian Government Model, not a U.S. Property marked 1911.  Serial number is in the C3XXX range, which indicated to me that it was built in 1913.  As far as I can tell, it is all original.  I picked it up at a gun show a few years ago for less than a grand .  I've never fired it, and I'll never do any work on it - it's my one and only real safe queen.

I received this Remington-Rand M1911A1 on Christmas day from my
brother-in-law. It came from my wife's father, who died earlier this
year and wanted me to have it. I also got the original paperwork (DD
FORM 1149-3, SHIPPING CONTAINER TALLY) which came with it after he
purchased it from the government in 1961. Pistol was $12.50, packing
& handling was $4.50, for a grand total of $17.00.
According to my BIL, it hasn't been fired since my FIL received it,
which I can believe after seeing some of the dried up grease and crud
inside after I stripped it down. I gave it a thorough cleaning and
lubrication and will hopefully get it to the range soon.

My Rock Island Armory 1911A1,  Put GI grips, wide spur hammer, and arched backstrap on it.  Carry it as a duty weapon.

Well this is going to cost me.  I really do need a 'Nam era
1911 to go with my 604.  Probably a souped up Rock Island GI
model. I do love my compact from them.

Maybe we can call it RPD !!!

Best, BC

I think there is enough room for these "off tangent" threads.  I get tired of nothing but 20" A1 clones, which is what most topics are about here.

+1 -  I'd like to see a little more variety in the retro forum.  One or two more stickied threads maybe.

We have the Retro shotgun thread.

Retro Pistol - .38s, .45s - etc

Retro misc.  - M-79s, Brunswick grenade launchers - etc

How about this  ?????  1965 is retro !

I so had that set! I played it all to death. Just asked my Mom what ever happened to it and she said she threw it out a couple years ago.

Yankee-V, yes that is John Glenn talking to mission control
5437, I've had that since new.  I just set up my '65? Moto-Rev jeep, trailer, and spotlight, and original fuzzhead GI Joe by my reloading bench.
My newer "retro" general Patton and Willie is keeping a watchful eye on reloading activities as well.........

Polish Radom built 1911? Very nice. Would like to know more about this pistol.  I almost want to buy a Rock River and a blank slide, then engrave and 'clone' the thing. Something about the look and feel of older guns...

I bought an RIA GI 1911 last fall when Buds had them real cheap. Its a nice shooting gun, the only obtrusive mark on it is their logo painted on the rear of the slide. If you had the slide blasted, engraved, and reparked it would be a pretty cheap clone.

Other than that the only "non correct" thing about it are the grips and the flat as opposed to arched mainspring housing. Its been a pretty good shooter. I was nervous about buying a cheap 1911 but its been 100%

I carry my Rock Island 1911A1 as a duty weapon, and as a EDC piece up i the mountains hiking.  I added GI grips, Colt WW2 wide spur hammer, and an arched main spring housing from Springfield Armory.  In several thousand rounds of everything fromn Hornady Critical Duty 220 Grain +P to my 200 grain lead reloads with only one FTF.  That was a reload that I apparently short stroked on the crimping stage that was slightly belled at the case mouth.  I LOVE MY 1911!  It is equally at home in either my dad's 1936 web belt and brown 1911 flap holster, or on my nylon duty rig with a SERPA holster
