Can anyone tell me what parts I need to change?

I imagine the spring and the cap but is there anything else?

Would the original cap have had a sping swivel like this?

That's an aftermarket cap, should work fine though.

Spring retainer: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/1319440A.htm

Magazine spring  http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/800100-01AA.htm

^^two parts you need in addition to whichever mag cap you decide to use

44Echo10 - thanks for posting the link to the sling swivel, I need one myself for my cheap CHinese 870 clone. (Hawk 982) Yeah I know, I know, but Cerberus gets the parts for 870s now from the same factory in China and charges 2X what this cost. ($200 SHIPPED.) I'm frankly pretty impressed by the damn thing, and have read quite abit about the metallurgy and comparison to new Remingtons. Now the older Remingtons are a completely different matter...well worth the extra money. For a truck gun though, the Hawk works.

Yeah, I hate giving that company my money. I bought a Hogue synthetic stock set for it, only to find when I went to pull the original synthetic furniture off that it was MUCH stouter and better designed than the Hogue stuff, which was absolutely flimsy in comparison. The thickness of the stock reminds me of the Sully stock, and it has threaded brass inserts where the Hogue just uses screws into the plastic. I was totally shocked, but the Chinese furniture is way nicer. Most 870 parts other than the barrel assy will work on this thing. I feel a little like a traitor, but why would I support Cerborus to get the same gun for $200 more?

So, I just lucked into a Stevens 77d yesterday from a relative. I was hoping to get the 77e buttstock, but I can't find one anywhere.  The gun I got appears to have the wrong buttstock anyways as it does not sit flush with the receiver. Maybe 1/4-1/3'' off from the receiver. I don't guess anyone has a standard or a 77e buttstock laying around they'd be willing to sell?

OK, so I'm giving in and want to build a retro shotty. Going to go for a clone USMC or USAF 870.

Am I correct in thinking I need to get my hands on an older 2 3/4 choke 870 Wingmaster to start with?

Non checked forend and a non rubber butt pad stock?

Yes a Wingmaster is correct. 21 inch barrel I believe for the USMC MK21, and 20 inch for the USAF 870. The barrels are very hard to find, and the adapters are almost impossible, especially the MK21. Good luck!

Thanks.

I found a 1959 870 2 3/4 28" mod barrel, non rubber pad stock for $355. That should be a good start after the barrel gets chopped, right?

Is it a sin to cut down a 59 870?

Nice looking group of Stevens shotties.

I used to love driving the deuce and a half, either the M35A2 or the 109, would always forget the three to four shift pattern was funky and skip fourth and go to fifth. They didn't care, never missed a beat.

Well I bought what I think is a late 60's or early 70's 870 Wingmaster with a 20" barrel, fixed cylinder choke and bead sights tonight at a local auction for $175. can't pick it up until next week. Going to be a USMC MKII clone. Now I'm on the hunt for the elusive bayo lug adapter.

It didn't look cut down in person, but with as old as it is who knows? Can't really see it in the pic, but the bead sight is still there. There where also two mid 70's 18.5" 870's there as well. Should have bought one of those. They went for $175 each.

That's a 1st Gen one piece bayonet adapter. Try finding the Gen 2 two piece. If you took Remington 870 Mil/LE armours course, you could actually buy them for $10. When Freedom Group bought Remington anything that wasn't in the current catalog got thrown out including the bayonet adapters.

I was able to pick the shotgun up today. Barrel dates to 12/70. It was probably a police gun. It's got a sticker under the recoil pad marking it as property of the town of Boylston MA. Barrel looks un-cut. I can still see milling marks. Other than some bluing loss on the barrel and slide it's pretty nice.

Funny, everything in that photo dates it except the gun.  Guns have such a long useful, style and market lifespan, they don't look as dated as other items.

I like the haircuts, You could set your watch to those guys haircuts!

Here is my progress so far. Got the old varnish stripped off and have rubbed several coats of BLO onto the furniture. The stock came out beautifully. The end of the stock (under the recoil pad) is marked with a metal adhesive tag with "Property of the Town of Bolyston MA" on it.

The sling swivel is the correct swivel that would have been shipped with the bayonet adapter kit from Remington. I guess the barrel has been cut. Measured with a cleaning rod down to the closed bolt I got 20 1/8". I can see concentric rings on the end of the barrel, like it was done on a mill or lathe, so maybe factory? I called Remington with the serial number and all they could tell me is that is was made in 1970 and is for a 12g. Since the barrel is dated 1970 they are probably original to each other.

The adapter is an NOS AF/NAVY/PD model, and an NOS? seat belt sling completes the look. I may have it parked in the future. If I do I'll have the extra little bit of barrel removed at the same time.
