The owner says its an origional Ithaca M37 trench gun brought back from Phan Rang Vietnam by his grandfather. Says the only thing thats been replaced is the buttstock. Im going to have him send me some more detailed pictures of the markings. How do I identify this thing to make sure?

So if this is the real deal, what should I pay for this thing?

At my office we have a waterjet so when the time comes to make the barrel/magazine estension tube clamp we will be waterjetting it from a steel remnant.

Once I find a good M37 I'll post some progress photos.

Good to hear that your project is progressing, keep us updated.

And just to add a random pic, this is a custom A5 built by Ned Christiansen that was shown in this thread:

Well, before I could get a good picture the guy who had offered to heat treat it for free came by and picked it up. Can't beat free, will post a post-heat treat photo. (Plus the guy has a fairly nice former PD issue Ithaca he wants to trade.)

My gun doesn't have a rear sling swivel... might ask him where it went. As mentioned, mine is a 1969 gun that did not go to Viet Nam. I paid $995 for it and thought I was getting a pretty good deal. If the gun you're getting can be verified to have been to Viet Nam I'd imagine its worth more, but not sure how much more. If the guy is sending you pics of guns that he is not selling and representing them as his own, that is fraud; not someone I'd deal with at all.

Im going to go along with it. Im not looking to have it shipped or transfer any money being I will be meeting FTF for this deal only after I have a friend up near him lay eyes/hands on it for himself. Im not paying near that price for it so if its been over there or not doesnt really matter much to me. But how could I go about finding out if it truly has or hasnt?

That is a sweet build.  It looks great.  What sling/swivel did you put on it?  Is that a parkerized finish?  I scored a project gun off EE with the stock and most of the pieces I need to do a build like that.

Sorry if I'm digging up an old thread here but I love military shotguns.  After reading it for the last two days yuns have me looking for a Savage 520 to convert. I like the Savage/Stevens 520-30 for its unique lines and take down action, no mistaking what it is at the range/show.  I plan to get one in good shape, cut down the bbl to 20", install a repro heat shield/bayonet mount and sling w/swivels and wear it out.  Damn you guys and your nice projects!  Costing me more money n shit...

Finally getting around posting pics of my latest Stevens Repro Trench Project

It was a $99 gun that ended up getting a left over original GI butt stock and a replica shroud from Numrich.

Just picked up a Remington Model 10 with a spare barrel for $300 in good shape.  I thought it would make a good unique trench gun as I haven't seen one mentioned yet.  Problem is the M10 Trench had a wood handguard rather than a heat shield attached to the bayonet mount.  Anyone know where I could find one or someone who could make one?  If not would it look right with the heatshield?

I would say have one barrel as a riot length and not go with the original trench style.  I have a model 10 that is cut to riot length and its slick and handy.  I think making an original hand guard would be difficult and cumbersome.

I was thinking about not trying to reproduce the handguard and mount a bayonet mount (minus the heatshield) just far enough up on the barrel so the takedown still works unobstructed.  From a quick google image search it looks like I could get the barrel in the 21-22" range and still be able to take it down.  I need to find out how to adjust the barrel bushing just slightly because im having a hard time getting the spare barrel on it(spare is the one I intend to cut down).  The original gun is a ribbed barrel model #s matching and in really good shape, don't want to cut it up.

Got a dilemma. Finally got a USGI heat shield for my M1200 clone and turns out it is too large to fit on my cut down commercial barrel. I guess the military versions had a heavy wall barrel. So, I need to either find a USGI M1200 barrel or make a shim that wraps around the barrel somehow. Any help?

Don't know if it was this thread or another one, but there was a picture that looked like someone had made a brass collet/shim type deal to make up the space.

Or you could sell the shield you have and buy the one Sarco sells, it will fit properly on your commercial barrel.

Then don't do it. You can find a barrel to cut up. If it's the same as the original, just pick the worst of the 2 to cut. (I would check ID myself, or have my gunsmith inspect it.) There is a guy on GB who specializes in SBS choke conversions. If I did an SBS, I would go there.

Picked this piece up yesterday.  Its a '97 Winchester Takedown made in 1951 #E9749XX.  It had a dented barrel about an inch from the end of the original 30" so I cut it down to 20" and had to knock off a bunch of light surface rust (no pitting).  The barrel looks almost new on the inside and the numbers match on the barrel and receiver.  Wood looks great except the knick out of the forearm.  Its slick and should shoot good.  Plan is to pick up the Sarco Bayonet Lug/Heat Shield and an '03 rear sling swivel and convert it into a trench model.  Ive been wanting a '97 Winchester for 10 years and finally got one.

Sorry for the sub par pics

And the Trio of Stevens Faux Trench Guns.  Each one was a rescued misfit unwanted shotgun restored to trench glory.  They are great guns.  The double hump is smooth as glass.

Do the Stevens scatterguns have slam fire capability? I have seen a few used ones in the past, if I have some coins in my pocket, I might look closer in the future. I especially like the middle one.

I just added this to my retro shotgun stable.  It is a faux Stevens 620A trench gun with ORIGINAL Winchester handguard.  The handguard is worth more than I paid for SG, so will sell it, buy a correct repro Stevens handguard and maybe have the whole thing parkerized.

Just a note for those wanting to make fake Stevens trench guns.

You can get the same gun for less if you look under store brands like Sears "Ranger" Or Wards Western Field model 30, etc.

A clean, already adultered (no collecter value) Stevens 520A (Sears Ranger)  on Gunbroker (no affiliation) now that someone better buy before I do

With a polychoke, it begs to be removed and cut down.

Put this in the shotgun forum, but seeing as the newest one is more than 40-years old, figured I might put it here too.

Little collection of ole Ithaca M37s

L to R...

1940 vintage gun/basket case/trenchie project - the stock off ePay cost more than the gun did off GB... heat shield is one of the awesome East Taylor reproduction pieces.

1941 vintage Riot Gun

1943 vintage Riot Gun

1956 vintage 16ga

1961 vintage 20ga

1969 vintage (real) M37 Trench Gun

1970 vintage Riot Gun

...and a 1971 vintage Riot Gun (kinda cool has a factory SKT choked barrel - not CYL)

The two trenchies... the "real" one, a 1969 vintage gun on top and the "fake" one, a 1940 vintage gun that was (and kinda still a basket case ...we'll call it a "work in progress").

...and a little bit-o-history on the 1940 trenchie project

The stock you see on that 1940 trench gun project took a couple years to find and was $142 on ePay... only paid $137 for the gun off gunbroker. Also have to make sure there is little or not pitting at all inside the bore; they're strong guns, but the barrel is pretty thin and pitting can really be the kiss-of-death for an Ithaca. Speaking of that 1940 gun, here are a couple "before" pics, they're the ones from gunbroker, kinda kick myself for not taking any before the work started, but its all I have at this point.

The gun was pretty haggard, but pretty much all there (say for the stock - learning experience). The gun functioned and fired fine, just had a bunch of pitting at the snout end of the bore and a bit of a bulge in it (that was OK as I had every intention of having it cut) and the stock was really buggered. I got a new stock that needed "final fitting" and have learned I am not much of a wood worker. Still have the stock and haven't touched it, so will probably try to sell it off sometime to someone more talented than I (not hard to find those people;). Found the "new" stock off ePay as mentioned. Had the barrel cut buy our own GunCat here on the boards and have used Naval Jelly to strip it all down. Was thinking of trying my hand at bluing, but believe the pitting to be a tad too much so will have it parkerized one day. The East Taylor bayonet mount and heat shield is worth every penny and I look forward to getting into Winchesters one day too and using their other mounts. Still have a few parts to collect for it and then have it all parked. Will be a "pretend" prototype Ithaca trench gun.

These are the pics of it off GB

Excellent Work - I love to see those old rag tag shotguns brought back

I just saw an Ithaca police shotgun semi locally, Apparently a factory park job but still has the roll engraved "game scene" receiver (The only part I didn't like about it)  for $350.  I might go back and get it.

Home parkerizing is pretty easy if you get a sand/bead blaster, and a stainless steel tank on a BBQ grill -
Brownells kit works well.

Also you can go the route of Alumahyde II dark Park gray - did that on one of my Stevens, nobody can tell the difference.  In fact my buddy that helps me do parkerizing asked me why I didn't call him over to do it with other parkerizing work and I handed him the can and said because it s"This".
He was like "wow - Looks good".

Ran accross these at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, WY last week. I thought they'd be of interest to this crew - especially the Remington Model 11 with the wood handguards and the bayonet lug:

OK I promised myself this is the last Retro shotgun for a while

" />

I went to my local dealer and he had this lonely Remington 31 with a damn Polychoke on it.   Only $200 cash out the door.   I just had to neuter that choke and bring to riot-type length.

Its the last of the Retro shotguns on my hit list.

So I have the Remington models 10, 11, 31, and 870.  I got to say the action is smooth as silk on this 31.

Super nice Model 31.  I couldn't have passed that up, some folks have all the luck.

I don't think I posted these photos before.  From the SEAL/UDT Museum in Florida.

Just won this up on gunmakemebroker.  Been wanting a decent Stevens M77E replica.  This ones a C model.  I want to save this furnture and get some proper military issue furniture.  Anyone here can send me the right direction, I would appreciate it.

From what I remember, it was one piece.  Keep in mind, last time I was there was 2010.
