Seriously, most are probably cut down from longer barrels. Aim just had some DD lightweight barrels on clearance but sold out quickly. I think the shortest was 10.5".

+1 this....also have used DPMS pencil barrels for XM / retro work...Look into ADCO for barrel shortening / re thread  & pinning (should you want to go the Non-SBR way)

Got my barrel back from Retro Arms Works and put my XM-177E2 build together so I thought I would share a pic of it. The lowers its currently on is temporary until I get a Nodak lower for it.....

Got this upper back from John Thomas today. Will post a thread on it with more pictures when I get back to a computer.  Based on the second 607 prototype in the black rifle.

Looks like SOG guys - a lot of them working in enemy territory would dye fatigues black. The squad gunner would often carry a Chopped RPD. Man, would I love one of THOSE!

Hello all!

I would like to show some pictures om my M16A1 „Shorty“ project.

First of all, it is a deact which means it was converted so it can’t shoot anymore. The chamber is blocked, the bolt cut-down and welded and the barrel is blocked. So none of you who has access to a real AR-15 has to be jealous in any way. It is just a wall-hanger and a big boy’s toy.

These deacts are legal here in Germany. As I am a big Colt fan this is the way to go for me, as getting a semi Colt AR-15 here in Germany is not easy at all.

Everything you see is Colt, but the missing full auto hammer. I have replaced it with a DPMS part as I could not yet find a Colt FA hammer. I used a M16A1 rifle that was in almost mint condition. I suppose it was originally sold by Colt to Malaysia and found its way as a deact to a German gun dealer.

I managed to find a genuine Colt stock with 2-postion receiver extension here on the forum, as well as Colt carbine hand guards. It took some time, effort and Money, but I wanted a real one so badly. The barrel was cut-down and rewelded to make a 10-inch barrel (don’t worry, it was already mutilated deactivated before..

I cut the bayonet lug off and blackened the spot using Birchwood Casey Aluma Black, which worked fine.

I wanted to build a M609 XM177-E1, but I could not yet get the  correct flash hider. I was trying an Airsoft part made from steel, but it still felt flimsy and wrong, so I am currently using the A1 birdcage flash hider.

I know, M16A1 markings as well as a full fence lower and a "CH" marked upper won’t be right for a XM177E2, anyway I love the look of the XM177.

On the pics there is a Colt 20 rd mag, I also have a well-worn GI 30 rd mag with a black follower as well, but this is missing its floor plate. If someone has a spare magazine floor plate or a used firing pin and a firing pin retaining pin, I would be interested to complete my Shorty…

That looks great. As another poster said in the thread..imo the XM177 series is flat out the coolest looking of any and all assault rifles. And this one is a fine example of it.

Well CRAP! I was being so careful on picking my "models" before engraving, but for some reason, I didn't pick the other side of the correct one. Oh well.....easy enough to fix. Thanks!

I see what happened. I was trying to get all the different makers on the different models. Already had a colt or 2, so went looking for an Armalite, and guess what the first 100 armalites listed where. I'm really getting to hate those.. Even if I do like their Colt licensed 203's.

GSMike,

Very nice shorty. Admire your attention to detail.

It is possible to own an AR15 in Germany, but the difficulty is in what, finding one for sale?

I was able to get me a good replica XM177 flash hider from Brick1 with the help of some friends in the US. It is the only part on my deact Shorty that is not Colt. Anyway I love it and the color matches the original finish of the late 1970s/early 1980s receiver well.

See the pictures:
