I've since replaced the type D stock with a type E trapdoor stock and flash hider has been replaced with correct A1 birdcage.
The type D stock and three prong are going to be used on my next project, a 605.

Your XM177E2 came out great, isn't this the one you were going to shim the hammer over on? How did that work out? Have you fired it yet?

Yep, that's the one.
I ended up using 3, .005" shims on the right side of the hammer. Everything lines up perfect now, no binding and no excess side-to-side play.
On the next 80% I do, I need to make sure all the jig plates are perfectly lined up before I start any cutting. Since the top plates are only indexed by the 4 bolts that hold them together, they can shift a bit if you aren't careful.

While we are on museum pics.. I have some from the UDT/SEAL Museum.

Strange the one with the grenade launcher is a SP1 receiver, and is missing the front takedown pin and hammer pin. The guy at the front desk said "Everything is real, no replicas." Hmmmmm

Maybe a little bit of each. I did the entire thing using some new parts
And a few real colt parts that were too damaged to
Use otherwise.

[Last Edit: --FLEET--] [#9]
In a recent TFB article, they pointed out some A1(ish) rifles were dusted off and used in response to the recent Baton Rouge police shootings.

It appears both receivers have been replaced. The upper now being a C7/A1 with shell deflector/A2 with field sights and lower being an A2. It also looks like the third pin has been removed so perhaps this department isn't full-auto friendly. Despite it being a sad and maddening situation, it's pretty cool to see these old rifles still in use.

ETA:  Would this configuration more likey be the result of colt using up old parts at the factory or being a surplus rifle with parts replaced?

Ok...  Im a noob.. This is what I've got so far (outside of the two other M4s i've built)

My M16M1 replica is coming along. I hit a snag with my barrel though. Apparently, a 20" barrel with the A front post already installed is a tough item to find available. I ended up ordering a 20" barrel w/o the post, a post, a triangular hand guard "cup" (whatever thats called), and a retro straight delta ring and am in the process of having a gunsmith assemble all that for me. Im sure its going to cost me out the ass. Oh well.

This is what I have so far.
Anderson lower
Brownells A1 Retro upper (no casing deflector)
A1 stock from cheaper than dirt
A2 grip from a previous build (Ill replace it with a A1 grip as soon as I get my hands on one. Not much difference though)
Mil-Spec lower parts kit from Palmetto St Armory
Mil-Spec Bolt Carrier Group and Charging handle from Palmetto St Armory
Retro teardrop forward assist.
I even painted a rack number on the butt stock. My kids initial + her favorite number.

I have all the other parts, but I'm at a stand still till I get this barrel situation resolved.  Any advice or input on my build would be greatly appreciated.

Edit:  I am at a loss as to why my pics are showing up as red links...  Anyone have any suggestions on that??

You have to have a certain number of "post" before you photos show up in a thread. But the links work just fine.
Second. As long as you like your build, that's all that matters.
Now, my opinion. (FYI Im somewhat a newbie myself) Keep doing research. Check out the EE and gun shows and shops  and look out for more "real" parts. Buy what you can when you can.
Other than that Sorry you got infected with this retro sickness. I cant seem to shake it.

Nice! I have a similar build. Although, I'm in the process of modifying the mounting hardware to tuck the 37mm launcher closer to the barrel, to make it look more correct. But for the time being, it has a dummy launcher installed.

This build uses a custom-built lower receiver from Black Creek Precision, which has M16A2 markings.

My collection of Service Rifles, the A1 has an A2 lower, which I intend to replace with a correct lower. I need a 1903 to go into its place and the M14 is an M1A dressed up in an M14 surplus stock.

I also intend on selling the M4 (a PSA rifle), to help fund my XM16E1 build.

At the top is an 1873 Trap Door, then an 1898 Krag. The M1 Garand has a Springfield receiver, the serial number dates it to late 1943.
