Is the Ameican Eagle 50 gr tipped varmint a decent defense round inside 100~ yards out of the 7.5" barrel? Any ballistic or gel tests? PSA has the AE 50 gr tipped varmint on sale for $6 a box (20 rds).

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Gel Test...18" barrel

Would likely be pretty nasty for up close and personal.

Sure looks like it would be.  I'm gonna guess that a 1:7 twist would be "ok" but not ideal in a barrel 10.5" or less but in a 16" barrel that's probably too fast a twist.  Still may need to pick up a few and give it a try.

55gr VMax from 7.5" barrel

velocity was 20XXfps, penetrated 19 inches with plenty of fragmentation in the first half of the wound channel. Stats are at 3:50 if you want to skip to those.

The twist rate remains the same in any length barrel for any given ratio. Barrel length only effects velocity.

This round shoots quite softly out of my 7.5" compared to 5.56.
