Perhaps this is a dumb question...but isnt this poking the skunk a bit?

I know its probably pretty rare to have to produce papers to a LEO, but isn't it dangerous to modify a ATF approved item (one that is in the grey zone to begin with?)...

Sorry...not trying to poke the skunk myself. Trimming the thing has crossed my mind and truth be told, I'm a bit scared to do it...

Not really poking anything. Reducing weight in the way it was done results in no change in how the arm brace is or can be used. There are still flaps that go around your arm, and a strap that holds it in place on your arm. Modifying it to not be able to attach to your arm might be an issue, such as gluing the flaps together, or something similar.
