Many ARs, first pistol build.  Mostly shoot 55 grain Lake City or Tula.  Trying to decide between the following:

5.56 or .223 Wylde

1x7, 1x8 or 1x9

Pros and Cons please

Thanks

I used a 10.5" .223 Wylde from MAS Defense and love it...

ETA: 1:8 twist...

Thanks Paul.  This is the kind of info I was looking for.  As 99% of my ammo is .223, I was thinking the Wylde would be a better fit than the 5.56, since it is optimized for .223 but I can still use 5.56 if I want to, and the 1:8 is a good middle of the road twist that should handle most anything.   I have been looking at MAS and they have a good selection at reasonable prices.

My preferred chamber and twist for almost all AR's is the Wylde chamber with a 1:8 twist.

Right now my 10" has a 1:9 barrel I got cheap.  Luckily it's stabilizing 75gr TAP at 100yards.  I prefer heavy open tip rounds for self defense, so a 1:8 or 1:7 would be a better choice IMO.

For 55gr 1x8 or 1x9 - 1x8 allows for 77gr SMK bullet stability if needed.
Wylde chamber if it fits in your budget.

either 5.56mm or .223 wylde will be fine

If you plan to shoot a lot of 55gr then 1x9 or 1x8 would be top choices but 1x7 should work fine too

I'm trying to decide between the MAS 10.5 and the Rainier Arms select.

Been wondering if the Rainer is worth the extra coin even though it doesn't have the Wylde chamber.

Thoughts anyone?

This guy has it nailed.
1/8 twist is the best all round for light to heavy. I could do 40-75 grain bullets with anything in between with that twist.

Unless shooting heavyweights on the upper scale 1/9 or better is fine. Building a match grade pistol with a magnified optic? If not a Wylde chamber is a needless expense.

For a pistol, I am extremely happy with the standard 1:7 twist and 5.56 chamber.

I just don't see the need to go any further expense on a match chamber for a pistol.

1:7  5.56 chrome lined or QPQ

short barrel means lower velocity

1:7 means you can shoot 77gr which fragment at lower velocity....the 77gr cause a lot of damage

I thought 1/8 barrels could shoot 77gr bullets?

If you can stomach the 2 extra inches... you will be hard pressed to find a better made barrel in 1/8 twist and Wylde chamber.  You might even want to contact them and see if they have a 10.5" offering that is not on their webpage.

I was tempted, but went with the 10.5 223 Wylde 1/8 M4 contour chrome moly. $130 was just too cheap to pass up.

I just ordered one off ebay with exactly the same specs for $110 shipped.

Damn evidently he changed his auction after I got that one.

I think this is what I will be getting as well. I am debating on this one or the M4 profile barrel. I didn't find weight specs though.
