Pennsylvania................................GTG with registration?
Yes Pistols Purchased in Pa. must be registered with the Pennsylvania State Police unless passed to blood relative or is old enough to not have a serial number. There may be other pistol registration rules that I am currently not aware of. I will find out if they exist.

Yeah, no permit to purchase or registration for long guns or handguns in PA. Private transfer of handguns are prohibited there, but that has nothing to do with state police or any kind of  registration, only a 4473 transfer.

Tht info for MA is not correct. An AR pistol is legal here if it was manufactured on or before 9/13/1994. No "special paperwork" is required.

Massachusetts...........................NO, but "maybe" if owned before 1994 and you have some special paperwork

This is not correct. If it was manufactured on or before 09/13/1994 and you have your Class A LTC an AR pistol is 100% MA legal.

If it was made after 09/13/1994 the only way you can legally own it is to add a forward grip, fill out a Form 1 and "make" an AOW.

There is no "special paperwork".

I'm new to this board and AR in general so if I'm out of line posting here without an itro let me know. My question is where you said you have to register your AR pistol build. Do you have to register it differently that a rifle or just register the lower like a regular AR rifle? I guess the question really is if you were to build a pistol out of a rifle that is already registered would there be a difference or reregistering.. Thanks

The registration above involves STATE laws (eg: here in Michigan, we are required to register ALL pistols, the AR pistol is not considered any differrent). As a result, also are permitted to concealed carry our registered AR pistols as we would any other pistol if we are licensed to carry (makes a great car/truck gun, as we cannot possess a loaded long gun in a vehicle).

Your question about making a pistol from a rifle involves a FEDERAL law though, as by definition it would then NOT be a pistol, but a short barreled rifle (Class III under the NFA or National Firearms Act), subject to prior Federal paperwork (Form 4) and tax ($200 for an SBR) and approval (MAJOR felony if done without). Oddly, it is purely legal to build an AR pistol from a virgin lower receiver (one that has never been assembled as a rifle). No shoulder stock permitted on a pistol (again, an SBR then). So it depends on what you want (not sure, but I believe SBRs are legal in Texas, they are not currently legal here in Michigan). HTH.

ETA:
Oddly, it is purely legal to build an AR pistol from a virgin lower receiver (one that has never been assembled as a rifle)
Guess I should clarify that what I find odd is of course is NOT that we can build a pistol from a virgin receiver, but that a rifle reconfigured into a pistol, even without a stock, is still an SBR (oddities of the NFA and convoluted gun laws in general).

Michigan - Pistol has been redefined from 30 inches to 26 inches. Registration is required on all pistols, L2P for private transfers (except if buyer is a CCW holder), I was at Cabela's and I held an HK416 .22 in a pistol config, so it's fine. Nothing it seems would prevent somebody from bringing an AR pistol here into the mitten state :)

Just to be clear: a pistol is not an SBR and vice versa.

This thread is regarding the permissibility of AR format PISTOLS on a state by state basis. Please keep discussion on topic.

doesn't OH have some law against having a magazine of more than 32 rds insterted ni a gun and doesn' NC define a machine gun as a gun w/ a capacity of > 30 or so rds, regardless of whetehr it has actual full auto function?

THis could matter if trying to conceal an AR pistol....

GOOD CATCH about SC defining concealable weapon as a "firearm" w/ it "greatest dimension being < 12"  So, maybe if OC is legal there lol, otherwise, carrying it would be like with carrying long guns??

New York should probably be changed.  I didn't read through all 7 pages of the thread, so maybe it's discussed.  At this time, I'm pretty sure no "true" AR-15 pistols are legal...not even "pre-ban".

However, "fixed mag" AR-15 pistols are good to go, if registered on a pistol permit (something I'm considering, as I just found out about a couple people that have done it).

If anyone knows differently, I'm happy to hear it.

MN is still GTG.

No registering, fine to OC or CC with carry permit, no length issues, no magazine issues, no private transfer issues, no purchase limits, no wait times, permit to purchase a pistol required (free, must take less than 30 days to process, good for 1 year), can have it cased and unloaded in vehicle passenger compartment without carry permit, also can be unloaded and uncased in the trunk of a vehicle w/out permit.

Reading some of the restrictions in other states makes me feel VERY lucky.

Michigan pistols have to be 26" or less.  Over 26" are just a "firearm" and can't be carried under a concealed carry permit.

In Illinois, the FCCA basically did away with all local handgun laws.
An AR pistol should be no problem in Cook county.

There's some disagreement with whether this applies to magazines as well (capped at 15 for Chicago), so you'd be safest with 15 rounders.

but if the lower transfers as "other" it can be built up sans State Police registration, as the building up happens after the 4473 is filed.

I may be late to the party, and this may have already been pointed out.

The State of Washington defines a pistol as...   RCW 9.41.040 (15) "Pistol" means any firearm with a barrel less than sixteen inches in length, or is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.

That, barrel length less than 16 inches,  is the only restriction I could find... If you can call it a restriction.

Also,  there is no registration requirement in Washington State... http://www.dol.wa.gov/business/firearms/faconcealfaq.html

New York State

Assault Weapons: Serving Police Officers

While police officers may continue to legally purchase and possess Assault Weapons and Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices under the former police exemption in Penal Law 265.20 (a) (1), this exemption only applies when the officer is an active police officer. Once a police officer retires, he or she is prohibited from possessing an Assault Weapon or Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices unless he or she 1) is eligible to register it in the same manner as anyone else (i.e. it was made unlawful by the Safe Act, acquired by the officer before 1/15/13 and is registered by 4/15/14), or 2) meets the definition of a “Qualified Retired New York or Federal Law Enforcement Officer.”
If the weapon was acquired by the officer after January 15, 2013, and the officer does not meet the requirements as a “Qualified Retired” officer (set forth below), he or she will not be able to possess the weapon while retired because there would be no authority to register an Assault Weapon acquired after that date. Likewise, if, by April 15, 2014, an officer had not registered an Assault Weapon that he or she possessed on or before January 15, 2013, and he or she does not qualify as a retired officer as set forth below, the officer would have lost the opportunity to keep the weapon after retirement.

shouldnt CA be changed to something more specific?

i see no mention of having to build one from an eighty lower, or buy a complete (ar) pistol.. from what i understand, those are the only two ways to legally build a pisol in CA.

I read the Michigan laws for someone else a couple months ago. They have a length restriction that applies to AR pistols of 26" or less for overall length. If it goes over 26" Michigan classifies it as a SBR.

Virginia is GTG, same requirements as any other handgun/lower from an FFL.(Multiple ID, state drivers' license, $5 state background check, etc)

I don't know if a Virginia CHP covers an AR pistol over 26" with a VFG, though, since it's legally considered a "firearm" not a handgun. Taking off the VFG makes it a handgun again, and then it IS covered by the CHP. Have fun.

I don't think it's necessarily an SBR, with no stock I think it's "other" firearm. They won't register anything as a pistol unless it's under 26 inches though.

There's nothing in NY law that says that pre-1994 ban AR pistols are illegal. Same goes for post SAFE act fixed mag AR pistols. There are a large number of pre-1994 AR pistols registered on people's licenses, and a growing number of post SAFE fixed mag ones (people post pictures all the time on the NY gun forums). That said, NY is a patchwork of counties with their own pistol license bureaus, all of whom have the authority to approve or deny whatever they want with little oversight. It probably doesn't even serve any purpose to mention NY for this thread because the state hasn't, and won't ever, make a ruling on such things. I know that Dark Storm Industries in Islip Long Island is working with the Suffolk County PD to get their unofficial stamp of approval on their DSI fixed mag (requires removal of trigger group to access set screw that releases mag) AR pistol and over 26" "firearm", both with Sig pistol brace. We'll see how that goes.

OK in Maine, no restrictions.
can be carried concealed or carried loaded in car with carry permit.
hunters are starting to build them in .300 BLK and carrying them loaded with 5 round mags in their trucks during hunting season perfectly legal with carry permit and hunting license.

In MN barrel has to be less than 16" in length, and "firearms" (pistol with a VFG even if OAL is 26" or greater is not legal under state law) without tax stamp although I am not exactly sure what they would classify it as.

Hopefully someone can shed some light.I want to build a pistol with 7.5" barrel in Michigan.  I have a virgin lower, and a 7.5" barrel on the way. With muzzle device should be over26". In Michigan I am being told by a local gun store owner that I cannot have a pistol over 26" without registering it as an SBR. I wanted to attatch a KAK tube to extend length, now, a bit leary... Can I be over 26", under 26", and how do I measure/ register. Nobody seems to be of any help around this town. I am also waiting on reply from MI state police (I will post with info). How do I properly measure?
