Looking to put together a SBR 7.62 x 39 upper with a 7.5" or 8" barrel and was wondering about needing or using an adjustable gas block on it.

No need for an adjustable gas block, 7.62x39 doesn't have the gas pressure like like a .223 or 5.56, especially with a short barrel.

My x39 rifles really benefitted from adj. gas blocks.  But I have no experience with a barrel as short as you're intending.  That thing's going to be a real dragon.

I have a 7.5" barrel and added an adjustable gas block to turn down the pressure, but still having issues cycling steel cases. Brass cases work fine.

I'm going to try a heavier buffer next to see if that makes a difference.

If I use a standard GB whats the shortest reliable/recommended barrel length?

Buying a barrel already made or shortening a 16" barrel? I built a 8.5" 7.62x39 years ago, needed to really open the gas port. Could never get it to run 100% with a piston on it. Ran OK as a gas gun, but the gas port was huge compared to a 5.56 barrel.

I have the PWS Diablo, which has a 7.5 inch barrel.  It does have an adjustable gas block.  I think 4 position.  Works great.  Semi or full auto, works.

This upper suppresses very well.  I'd get a adjustable gas block just to run it with a suppressor.

Before you ask, the Saker 762 is rated for that barrel length in full auto.  I asked SilencerCo before I did it, and I have it in writing.

I had a PWS Diablo and sold it now I miss it and was thinking I would build my own this time. I have read the 7.5" barrels are not that reliable and was thinking I would go to 8-8.5" maybe even 10.5" but would like to keep it as short as possible.
