I am trying to decide my next barrel for my AR.
Have a .50 Beowulf already.
And a can for it. Will work an any sub caliber too.

Trying to decide .458 Socom or 450 Bushmaster.

450 BM is legal for deer in my state 458 S is not, but .50 BW is.
I reload and 458 bullets are available in rifle bullets.
But everything 450 is cheaper, ammo, brass, dies etc.

Help.

Most folks usually do one or the other, I went .50beo. No "need" or "want" for the .458 or .450. If you want something a little flatter and reload, .375 socom is another option.

I went with 450B because ammo was available locally at Academy.  I only shoot a few rounds a year deer hunting.  Academy put their 450B ammo on sale a couple of years ago for $16.98 a box after hunting season and the 10 boxes I bought will last the rest of my life.  It has killed several north Arkansas whitetails and where I hunt a long shot is 75 yards or so.

For high volume shooting I have 223's and 6.8's.

That's what works for me.

I picked 458 when I had to decide for several reasons.
  458 uses standard ar15 magazines.
I'm a reloader and their is more bullets available for 458.  458 uses 45 caliber rifle (45/70) bullets where as the 450 uses a different diameter with less choices.  If you don't reload there seems to be more 450 available on the shelf

I went with 458 socom. I reload and 458 provides bullet weights from ~250-600gr.

I build rifles to fill a role, what role with one cartridge fill over the other? If one has more practical use than the other, go with that one. If I were to ever go big bore, I think 458socom is where I would land, but I have heard of straight wall cartridges being the only choice in some areas for hunting. So if that's the goal, go with the bushmaster. But since you already have the Beowulf, I don't see a need for both.

Thanks for replies.
I am leaning towards 458 because bullet selection can really let you play around.
The 50 BW is cool but not a lot of bullet selection.

So you're just wanting to do a barrel swap?

I thought you were talking about building another big bore. Go with which one you can hunt with.

Boxofrox

I have an MGI quick change upper and lower.
Two cams and the barrel is swapped.
Swap bolt or entire carrier and good to go.
For AK mags or Colt SMG 9 mm swap the mag well too.
I can hunt with the 50 Beowulf.
Just got wood for another big bore barrel.

Done.

Pulled the trigger so to speak.
Black Teflon coated barrel and tank style brake.
From Obsidian Arms.
Gas block and tube also black finish.
Dies and brass and bullets on the way.

Fun Fun

Good pick on the 458 S.
Why is 458 S illegal for Deer where you are but 50BW is legal?

Straight walled cartridges only, no bottlenecks.

To be more correct.

"(d) A .35 caliber or larger rifle loaded with straight-walled cartridges with a minimum case length of 1.16 inches and a maximum case length of 1.80 inches."
