Ok,
So I have an Aero M5 set on the way.  I've yet to decide on 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 though.  I know 6.5 is the superior round, but since I have no access to anything over 200 yards at the moment, .308 is still a viable choice.

Anyway, what  are some of the better budget minded choices for a barrel (or barrel/bolt) combo?
How are the Criterion hybrids from Brownells?  Criterion Fulton?  BA?  Mega? BHW? X-Caliber?
Any makes to avoid?

Green Mountain makes great barrels at excellent prices

Ballistic Advantage barrels have impressed me in both price and quality.

Check out X-Caliber barrels.  I have a couple of them and am very pleased with them.   I have one in 358 Win and another in 6.5 Creedmoor.   When I build another rifle they will be first one I go to for my barrel.

Very happy with one of the two 16" BA barrels I have... still working out possible accuracy issues on another. Left a msg with a nice lady at BA but never got a call back. If I don't get where I need to be, I'll give you guys a shout. Best I'm getting with factory TAP and FGMM is just under 2"... but there are other things to tweak before blaming the barrel.

Despite a possible minor accuracy issue, which I can't 100% say is the barrel, I still chose BA's 18" heavy barrel for my current and 3rd Aero M5 build.

Ballistic Advantage, Faxon, Mega, BlackHole/Rainier Arms all seem to be popular options.

I doubt you can go wrong with any of them.

I chose a Mega 20" barrel for my first build and have been impressed.

With junk NATO ammo during break-in I was a bit worried when it shot 6~7 MOA groups.

When I switched to 175gr. FGMM, it shot .7 MOA without even trying.

I need to get some 168gr. FGMM and see which bullet weight it likes better.

When I do a serious test, it will likely shoot under .5 MOA.

Tony,
Do you offer the option of adding a matched bolt with the barrel?

I have a lilja barrel on one of my Grendel's and I'll tell you it is a nice, nice barrel, gorgeous machine work , polished chamber and barrel extension and shoots very accurate

edit : nevermind you said budget, they are expensive but worth every penny

I've had EXCELLENT results with my BHW barrel, and cleaning is a WHOLE lot easier than with my 1-10 conventional cut. Also, the polygonal seems to be more consistent for longer periods, and I don't see much if any POI shift between a clean barrel and a fouled barrel.

Hey Ballistic Advantage, any chance of lightweight 16" or 18" RIFLE gas system 308?

Ok, so I'm sold on .308.  Now, one thing I'm "concerned" about is the chambering.  I like to shoot (at least with bolt guns) 175 SMK,...usually Black Hills.  Are most of the AR 308 barrels compatible with this, or cut for something else?  I don't want to spend $$ on a barrel, and then not have it shoot very well because it's ideally chambered for a different load.

This also begs the question; which is a better length...18" or 20"?

I want to build a rifle around your barrel, I've read so much good about them and it would be a great one in my rifle.

If you want to send me one for excessive testing, you know......
