For 18" MLGS and ILGS, there is enough dwell time that when combined with a can, you get a lot of back-pressure and a tendency to unlock early.
For an SBR with CLGS and the right port size, you might not need adjustable gas.
Adding an adjustable gas block won't hurt you if you run it open in the end, but it does give you some options.
The biggest disadvantage with them is choking the gas port and causing early erosion, which requires more choking as the port erodes more.
Shooting in higher volume will have this show up faster than someone who shoots moderate to low round counts.
