You mean 30-06? And who builds one?

Noreen makes one. It is absolutely pointless.

If you want to buy something like that go for it. Practically speaking there is no advantage to doing so.

A 308 can do pretty much anything 30-06 can. Parts commonality is going to be an issue, and you won't be able to run it that hard. If it is something you want in your safe go for it, but other than that it doesn't offer anything over more common platforms on the market.

Buying a .30-06 semi-auto may be novel, but it's asking for trouble. Magazines will be your first problem. Load development may be needed for reliable functioning.

You will have a real hard time if you ever try to sell it. I'm really attracted to the current semi-auto Browning BAR, especially the "Colt" high polished blue model. The cost is prohibitive, but that doesn't stop me from wanting one.

There are so many quality .308 rifles currently available, many  which accept Magpul magazines. Also a huge aftermarket exists for barrels and bolts etc. Not so much with a .30-06 AR. Even .308 semi-autos are BIG and HEAVY compared to AR-15's.

Consider a M1 Garand or a bolt action if you want a .30-06. A little nostalgia or a nice hunting rig can put a smile on anyone's face.

Economically speaking and performance speaking it does not seem to make a lot of sense...

It's much more expensive, much heavier, ammo is more expensive (mostly vs 308 Win), is proprietary,
and does not offer much in the way of performance gains over the 308 Win and so on...

Nice range toy though...hey its your money spend it as you wish...

Good luck.

It basically does what a 308 does but with complications that are bad. Like expensive guns and ammo.

.308 was developed for semi-auto use in mind. With a .308 you basically get .30-06 ballistics in a shorter/easier to cycle round.

If you want a .30-06 semi-auto, buy a Garand.

Thanks for the good responses. Practical input. I grew up on the Winchester 30.06 my Dad had and really liked it, wish I had kept it. I already have a 308 upper so may use it. Thanks.

KISS  If you want a 30/06 semi get a BAR or Garand.  My father shoots a BAR for deer hunting and I shoot an R25, different generations have different tools.

Personally, I think an '06 AR would be pretty cool to own.......and spare me the BS about a .308 being the same as an '06.  There is no replacement for displacement when it comes to case capacity.

If you can score a rare-as-hens-teeth Cobb MR-300 in 30-06, snatch it up.  Uses BAR 20-rounders.

They were a small design firm that Bushmaster bought before Bushmaster was bought by Cerberus.

If you want something more powerful than 308, why not look for the Armalite AR10 Ultra Mag?

Or a 6.5 Creedmore?  (i.e. .260 Rem)

Personally, I own a few 30-06 rifles, including a Garand.  I don't own a .308.  If I was going to get an AR-10, it wouldn't be a .308, and definitely not a 30-06.

But hey, OP, it's your money.

When I was in the military I got to go to a demo by Cobb Armory. That was a fine weapon. Too bad their design got shelved.

This.

If you want to reach out to longer ranges than the .308 was designed for go .260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmore.

Wow, this simple question elicited a lot of ignorant/ill informed responses!

My favorites are:
1. There's no advantage over 308
2. 308 replaced 30-06 in service

I have an AR IN 30-06. It is made by Noreen Firearms. They call it BN-36. Here is my input

First the Cons since they are significant.

1. It is heavy...heavier than the 8.5lbs on the website.  The rifle weighs about 9-10lbs empty and about 11-12lbs w a 20rd mag & high power scope.
2. I had an early model that was recalled. It wouldn't chamber a round and when I got it back (paid shipping both ways) I still had FTE/FTF issues.
3. 30-06 is a VERY versatile cartridge. It can use fast burning powders (varget, ar-comp, 4895 etc) or slow powders (H-4350, RL-19/22, etc) driving heavy bullets. This versatility overpowers the gas system.  This is to say you have to re-adjust the gasblock setting when you change loads.
4. The 22" barrel is a bit short & heavy for my taste. I would have preferred a medium profile 24-26" barrel.
5. Magazines are expensive $85 each

The PROs
1. It IS an affordable 30-06. I paid $1,900.
2. It IS a modern 30-06 rifle. It is more accurate & has a far stronger action than an M1 garand.
3. Performance gain over 308 or 6.5s is SIGNIFICANT. my favorite load is 185gr Bergers Hybrids + 58.5gr H-4350 @ 2,850ft/sec. Second is 178 AMAX with same load running 2,900ft/sec. These loads were developed over my magnetospeed.
4. 20rds of the above loads ready to go is a beautiful thing.
5. There are 5round hunting magazines available.
6. They have come up with a 26" shielen match barrel. This will allow the hand loader to get factory 300WM speeds from their 30-06.

That is your input on the 30-06 AR.

You can get the performance from AR10 receiver sets by just using the WSM or RSAUM cases.

Accuracy Systems does:

243 Win, 260Rem, 7mm-08, 284Win, 308Win "Match", 35Rem, 300Savage, 257Roberts, 358Win, 300SAUM, 325WSM, 6.5 Creedmore, & more.

Accuracy Systems

You need a longer gas system with any of the over-bore bottle-necked cartridges that have case volume that exceeds the .308 Win.

Gas port pressure needs to be tame, and that isn't going to happen with a RLGS and any of the bottle-necked magnums.

If you use a Flat Spot lower, you can stretch the mag well, as it's steel.  And the upper designs referenced in that thread are also intended to be made from steel, so they could be extended.
