I am building my first AR on an Aero U/L set I just ordered.
It is probable I'll get the barrel (and bolt assembly) from Ballistic Advantage.
Overall, in many barrel sites, I see many 18" barrels and less 20" - any particular reason? Is a 18" Mid length gas system OK?
What would you recommend?

I recommended 18 or 20" but with rifle gas instead of mid length. Will operate much smoother and reliably with rifle gas.

Many do 18" with mid length because of the fad to cover the gas block.

I have a 21" and 16" Noveske's and both of them are heavy. A 20" is required if you want to shoot it in NRA high power service rifle division. If you never want to shoot a bulls eye tournament any length will do.

You can shoot longer or shorter than 20", but you'll have to compete in the match rifle division against premium bolt actions and zero recoil AR15 space guns.

Decide what your intended purpose is and build the rifle around it. Even 16" barreled rifles carry long because the receivers are a couple inches longer than a AR15's. A SOPMOD or similar stock helps, a full size A2 stock makes the rifle feel like a truck.

I use an 18" Faxon barrel with mid gas and a 12" MI handguard to cover the gas block.  Here's the same gun with a 16" PSA barrel and mid gas.  Since the pic was taken swapped the barrel for the 18" one.

Does anyone recommend where I can get a good 18-20" SS 308 barrel (std. weight) with rifle gas port and a matched bolt (or bolt assembly)?

If you're going to only have one AR 308, then a 18" is probably a good compromise.

If you are going to have more than one AR 308, then 20" is probably a good starting point.

im surprised to not hear more 16" responses..

.308 is plenty lethal (and accurate) out to 800-900 yds with a 16" barrel..

Thx.  Finally got it running correctly.  A Syrac adjustable gas block solved my cycling problems.

I have a Aero M5 with a 16" barrel and mid length gas system that has barely any more felt recoil than an AR15

I have an adjustable gas block.

Have about 400 rounds thru it now without a single failure to feed or eject.

I credit some of this to the JP enhanced bolt.

There's a video on youtube of a guy busting gallon water jugs at 900 yards with an LMT MWS with a 16" barrel while laying on he dirt.

The way I see it, the main issue with a 308 AR is they can be heavy.

With a 16" barrel you can have the best of both worlds.

A rifle capable of hitting out to 900 yards and a rifle that weighs under 8 lbs (not including scope) if you pick the right parts.

Get what you want and I think you know what you want, what you really really want...

How about a 16"?

I love my 16" with mid gas but I picked it because I'd be carrying it around hunting. If it's going to be a range bench gun I'd go 18 or 20 for a little extra velocity. Definitely rifle length gas on either of those though.
