I just unloaded my 6.8 upper and it sure seems like demand has really softened for 6.8 stuff. I know that PSA used to have a lot more but most of it is clearanced out or at super low prices lately.
I replaced my 6.8 with a 7.62x39 and I'm very happy with it. I just can't see shooting a caliber that costs as much as .308 to reload and has such a small fan base anymore.
What do you guys think?

Not hardly by any stretch of the imagination IMO.  Just the number of wildcats based on the 6.8 case (I have five 6.8 based wildcats myself) is enough to keep the parent cartridge alive and well for decades to come.  I see no softening of the 6.8 locally and with the expected upcoming change in Indiana deer hunting laws I expect to see the 6.8 to become even more popular.

I don't see that trend.

How PSA manages inventory should not be a reflection of the market

It has no carrier, the ammo is reloads, and I'm sure the hack job gas block didn't help that listing any. I have to imagine the upper you sold was nicer .

Stag uppers aren't in demand for 6.8 SPC users. It has the SAAMI spec chamber. Price is too damn high as well. I can get an ARP barreled upper for that much.

I don't see the 6.8 SPC going away. I love my 6.8 SPC, and no it doesn't cost as much as 308 to shoot.

We now have Federal brass for cheap and pulled bullets for cheap.

The SPC will become popular if they can get the ammo prices down to .40-.50c When I buy 300win/30-06 from PSA for $13box and 6.8 is the same or more

The cartridge is a semi 30-30 useful but still has its limits trying to fill a niche.

have I thought about buying a PSA FN complete upper for $390, until I look at the ammo price and think the only feasible way would to reload and I just don't shoot enough for that.

You need to get into reloading. The 6.8 SPC isn't expensive to reload for. The ammo you quoted is shit ammo.

It is extremely popular.  ARP can't keep barrels in stock.  Neither can PSA.  Went by a PSA store last Saturday and they only had 3 boxes of 6.8 ammo.  Rep said it is usually gone the day it gets stocked.

You can  get it for $11.99 / 20 for cheap stuff that is still quality.

Comparing same quality it is cheaper than .308.

Reloading is cheap.

Sales are up, more ammo companies are making it, more LEO and others are adopting it.

It is actually growing, not the opposite.

I was a 6.8 fan boy. I still read 6.8 Forum... Gitting rid of it. Makes no sence to me any more for the dollar invested and the performance has been a little understated. Plus I do not need another calliber taking up space. It works....within limitations. I can get a whole lot more cross over usefulness from 243 or 308 for a buck a round over the counter. They both shoot flatter and Cary more energy to target at a more useful range.

In before the 6.5 queers....

Why you gotta be like that. The 6.8 died when steel cased 6.5 became available. Until they do the same with 6.8 it is a dying caliber. To bad really, I like some of the 6.8 wildcats coming out, and there needs to be a steady supply of brass to convert. Please, keep shooting the 6.8, keep it alive...

Very far from dead.

-Vendors announcing new rifles/components, all the time
- ammo is everywhere I shop
- new ammo and reload components keep coming out
- I can reload 6.8 cheaper than 308
- my 6.8 rifles are much smaller/lighter than my 308 rifles (and I own three DPMS GIIs)
- easier on my cans than 308 (most of my cans need at least 16" for 308)
- effective round, for 90% of the hunting I do, or hope to do
- shoots great from my SBR
- goes bang when I pull the trigger, which is more than I can say for the 7.62x39 rifles I own and have owned
- good variety is ammo and components, vs 7.62x39. With 6.8, I have outstanding choices from the 85-120gr range. With my 7.62x39, I can load from 123-123gr...

Brass was the only issue, but I bit the bullet and bought 2k pieces of it. Currently own three 6.8s, and happy as a pig in slop.

I see it everywhere I go... Not even close to dead.

Make that 80% of the power for half the powder.
The 6.8 is still growing, as well its being adopted by allied military's.
Fed brass as low as .18 each currently.
Bonded projos for .17, not junk bullets, bonded barrier blind hunting capable bullets.

As others have said you cant judge a caliber by one overpriced upper on gun broker

Before this degrades further...

Walmart sells 6.8 ammo.  As long as that is true, the 6.8 is not dead or near it.  Its been at least partially adopted by foreign military.  Again, not going away any time soon.  That contract alone allowed for the tool up of a line that can and will crank out millions of rounds.

You can talk 6.8 vs 6.5 vs  .308 vs. 300bo whatever.... no point or data will change the above.

This time of year is the time to buy, not sell.

Whatever, if you're happier with a 7.62x39, so be it. Different ballistics, apples & oranges.
.308, does not come in a AR-15 platform. The 6,5 Creedmore come in an AR-10 platform. A NATO round with military surplus ammo will be cheaper. The 90GD and S&B 6.8 are seconds, But, not Lake City or small country surplus. Although, the 6.8 GD is made by ATK/Federal (in MN).
No, it's not dead. It been around for a while & will remain. Allot of ammo available for it.Military contracts have been mentioned. Reloading expands it's capabilities. Especially with longer COAL & a little bit more powder.

6.8 seems to be ideal for guys who like to hunt medium game with an AR (Like me).

My 6.8 build is 6lbs with Iron sights. .308 AR is a lot heavier. .300 BLK's rainbow trajectory makes it less than ideal for hunting open spaces IMO.

6.8 seems to be perfect for deer, especially in a state where you can't hunt deer with 5.56.

If I want to shoot cheap, I've got .22 lr or 5.56 for that.

It seems everyone is looking for the "one gun/caliber to rule them all." For your first gun, or if you can only afford one, I sort of get it. Most of us own more than one, so it seems silly.

The XM68GD has been being sold as 1st overruns and as blem seconds.
The Federal cases and 90gr Gold Dot pulls are from this ammo.
Federal was contracted for millions of rounds of it.

The S&B ammo is first run excellent ammo.
The FMJ, PTS special and TSX loadings are all top notch.
The brass is some of the best for reloading available.

With a few rifle manufacturers selling them as fast as they can build them, barrel makers not being able to keep them in stock, ammo components selling fairly quickly at slightly reducing costs, the 6.8 is here for the long run.

Nailed it. If I was planning to sit in a stand with a rifle in my lap all day, then my .308 would be fine. It starts feeling pretty heavy when walking through the woods all day though. The 6.8 is much lighter, very accurate, and more than powerful enough for any shot I'll be taking around here. I've started collecting parts and sent in a Form 1 to build a second 6.8, this one will be 12.5".

ETA: Anyone who believes that the 6.8 is dead can feel free to send me their leftover ammo for proper disposal.

Over the last few years,  I've found the ammo and reloading for 300BLK and 6.8 to be very similar in price and availability. I don't even know why people would compare .300 and 6.8. 6.8 excels as a flat shooting-high velocity medium sized cartridge. .300 excels at shooting a big projectile slowly, both subsonic/supersonic suppressed and unsuppressed.

The nice thing about 6.8, is that I can use one powder for 5.56, 6.8, and .308. And I happen to have a decent amount of it. (Benchmark).

Now if only I could get my 6.8 build to eject.

I just bought one of PSA's CHF CL uppers, and judging by the selection of reloading components and factory ammo I'm seeing, it doesn't look very dead at all.  Judging by the amount of this stuff that is out of stock, it looks like it is very much in demand.  It's looking like this is going to make an ideal do-it-all deer and hog rifle.  Light weight and compact for stalking and moving through thick brush, with a free float handguard it should be very accurate out of a stand, and of course being a flat top AR it is super optics-friendly.  It should also do well in the DMR role and will make a good gun to keep in the car, with bonded barrier blind hunting loads.  I'm really looking forward to getting into this cartridge.
