I've got a 16" surplus ammo and arms 762x39 barrel that will be going to adco to get cut to 12.5". My question is though, should I also get it reprofiled behind the gas port?
It is currently .875" thick and seems to be a heavy pig. I'll be using a 10" ALG tube so "lightweight" is kinda my theme.
ADCO said .675" is pretty light for a .311" bore.

My dilemma seems to be whether it's worth the $80. That's not a huge chunk of change but it makes some difference...

What say you?

Depends if you can find the barrel profile you want for a better price as-is.

.675 leaves only .182" of barrel wall thickness, so I agree with Adco that's very light.  I wouldn't go that light if it was my barrel.  If you have it reprofiled to .750, that leaves you with just a hair under a quarter inch of barrel thickness.  I certainly wouldn't go any less than that, and unless you're adamant about shaving off every extra ounce, I question if it's worth $80.

.182" is plenty of wall thickness even for the chamber at max pressure, so along the barrel forward of the chamber is more than enough.

Put it on a diet.  Which ALG are you going with?  Installed weights are:

* 10": 8.96 oz
* 12": 10.24 oz

A suppressed 7.62x39 can be really quiet with a good can when supersonic.  Some of the quietest supersonic guns I have seen have been suppressed AK's overseas, especially with the BR Tuote cans from Finland.

ADCO said they wouldn't suggest under .650" and .675" was their suggestion.
10" ALG tube, no rails attached. It's crazy light

Barrel is .750" forward of the gas port which is how it would remain.

If it will help ease your mind any, a FAL barrel ahead of the gas port measures .590".  That's on a standard 21" Brazilian barrel!  The barrels on the early "Cuban" AR-10s were about .625".  Also, check with John Thomas about reprofiling that barrel.  He could probably do it cheaper, and faster,  RetroArms

+1 for John Thomas.  They guy does amazing work, and is fast.  He pays attention to details and takes a lot of care to put traditional craftsmanship into his work, while being efficient.

John is $20 cheaper to cut and thread and $20 more to reprofile and park so a dead even price for what I'm looking for.

I've had multiple guns at multiple smiths for 6+ months. That doesn't Bother me. I'd rather save 20% and wait a few months

John Thomas did these.  He's not your everyday gunsmith, that's for sure. He's an artist.
