I have a Mega MATEN which has magpul flip ups on it now...obviously they don't quite do it justice so I am looking at a vortex viper pst ffp 4-16 or a 2.5-10.

The vortex rep talked me into the 2.5-10 which was actually less than the other one but with their LEO discount program lets say they are both affordable. I want to know if you guys think the 2.5-10 will cut it or if i will want the the 16x for longer ranges? I originally wanted the razor hd gen ii 1-6 but thought the rifle would out shoot the magnification.

I have a fulton armory 18.5 inch barrel on it and run a yhm 762 can. The scope hasn't been recieved yet but I am considering sending it back for the higher of the two powers. Another plus is the 4-16 has a larger objective lens. Even with the flip ups the grouping is very nice. My current range has steel and paper out to 600 and on nearby public land I can shoot as far out as I please. If I knew how to, I would post a picture of the rifle for viewing pleasure.

I have the Viper PST 4-16x, it is an awesome scope for the price.  The glass is crystal clear.  For me I wouldn't want less than 14x magnification for a gun that is capable of shooting 500+ yards.

I'm agreeing with you more and more.... probably wont open the 2.5-10 and will just send it back for the 4-16. Did you have any issues with the objective lens clearing your rifle? Probably looking at a Larue qd mount like my last one.

I don't think the 2.5-10 would be lacking for your rifle. 10X is plenty of power for most purposes of shooting a .308. Having said that, I have a Nightforce 3.5-15x50 on my 17.5" .308 and haven't found myself wanting anything smaller.

What did that run you? I've had good luck with vortex and get a hell of a deal with their program which is why I am likely to stick with them but who knows what the future holds for whatever rifle is next.

I'm pretty sure it was $1,750 at the time from Sport Optics.

Yeah if I get a 300 win mag project in the future i was going with a nightforce or a razor hd gen ii 4.5-27. Thanks for the input guys I have the vortex but haven't opened it yet. I'll see what I think of it and will go from there..... if the wife doesn't catch on maybe I'll just get the 4-16 as well and use QD rings for both.... i dream of course

Might want to post that in the EE before you get a slap on the wrist. No sales alowed in the tech forums.

Thanks for the help I made a decision for the 2.5-10 to go back until I get a 4-16 or something similar. For gun deer I used a department store 3-9 just to get by and dropped a doe at 265 but I put over $2000 in the gun so deserves a good optic! ... My problem is I get too many irons in the fire like my pistol suppressor and SBR tax apps that need to be completed and I run out of money so I don't have ANY optics at the moment. I think I'll hold off until shot show to see whats out there or whats new!
