Anyone know of a cheap source for a complete 5.45x39 upperw/BCG? Say $500 or less? I'm thinking of putting a cheap plinking rifle together, but I'm not seeing much in the way of complete upper assemblies. AIM's Spike's upper looks nice, but I want something cheap to shoot surplus ammo, corrosive or not.

Also, is everyone replacing their hammer springs to stop light strikes, or is there another fix, like the 'enhanced' firing pin for the 7.62x39 uppers. If possible, I'd like to keep from modding my lower that I'm using for my 7.62x39 upper.

I know you said you wanted a complete upper, but you can build your own for less than 500. Just a thought.

Do the bolt/FP option, use your existing carrier/charging handle.

If your existing lower ignites 7.62x39 surplus then you should be good with 5.45.

I'm thinking about building my own upper, just not sure if there's going to be much cost savings once I factor in the cost of a barrel block & wrench. US Armory has a 5.45 barrel with FSB for $260, probably $100 for the block & wrench, so $410 for an assembled upper doesn't look so bad. Or I may just wait til my coffee can fund gets a little bigger and maybe by then AIM wil get in more of those Spike's midlength uppers, more than I wanted to spend but well worth it.

if you add the bcg and charging handle to that upper its 650, aim has a spikes upper for 620 but good luck finding it in stock.

Actually only $550, but I agree that the Spike's would still be worth the extra $70. I was considering one a year or so ago and was impressed by the reviews and specs.
Is there a source for reliable 5.45 mags now?

I hear good things about the ASC mags, I've had very good luck with the 7.62x39 ASC mags. I keep hearing that the surplus 5.45 ammo is drying up but there are still some great deals out there.

I'm not sure what you are looking at in regards to your tools, but all you would really need is something like a DPMS tool, about $35, and a receiver block, as cheap as $30.  Even less if you pick them up used.
