THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I bought a cmmg 308 about 5 months ago. When I first shot it I used 150 grain rounds. I couldn't get a group smaller that 4 MOA at 100 yards. I noticed that my hand guard was loose. I thought that was the reason for such a large grouping. I sent my rifle back to cmmg and they tightened it and said it was fixed. i got it back and went right out and shot it again. The grouping was still around 4 iMOA. I did some research and found that the suggested ammo is 165 grain bullets or higher. So I tired that. still no good. I finally bought some hornady 168 gr A-MAX Superformance and my grouping did get better, around 2 MOA. Still not what I was expecting. Has anyone else had these issues. I saw a post from someone on here who got good groups with 150 grain with the same rifle. I'm not sure what to do. I'm really frustrated. The optics OI'm use are millet LRS 6x25. I have had this scope on another rifle and go 3/4 MOA with it. So I don't think it's the scope. Any help would be appreciated.

First thing I'd check is your optic mounts/rings and your crown and muzzle.

My CMMG shoots into about an inch with Federal 168 gr. Gold Medal Match and it looks like I am going to be able to at least duplicate that accuracy with handloads. Try the Gold Medal's (They are on sale at Sportsmans Guide right now.) and see what you get. Don't expect much help from CMMG; I don't think they have anybody on their staff that knows anything about firearms. I get the impression they buy all their parts from whatever supplier has a few this week and then have a couple of kids put them together into something that resembles the diagram that comes with a factory AR.

Pretty disheartening info here... I just got a CMMG Mk3 .308 last week and I haven't had a chance to send some rounds downrange yet. I hope they aren't plagued with demons, I'd look into optics/mount.

GO over to 308ar.com and read over the CMMG section. Hope you got a good one. (Like maybe one with the proper size gas port.) On a positive note; Brent and Josh in customer service are real nice guys and they try to help.

Thanks for the responses. I will look into all of those things.

I Hope you got a good one too. I read some other post before I bought mine and people loved the rifle.

I think that there the people I spoke to at CMMG tried to help but I got no call back after it was sent back to me and no explanation to what they did they just just a cardboard piece with 5 holes in it. Which could have been shot with any rifle. I will let everyone know what happens after I check those things.

Just got back from the range (literally) and saw this so I though I would post my most recent experience. I purchased a OD Green MK3 with the 16" SS Barrel a few months back and after experiencing the "CMMG Standard" FTE issues, sent it back to CMMG. While they didn't solve the problem, they did replace the barrel with the 18" SS version at my request - there's a full thread with my experience here somewhere, probably archived by now. Short version - CMMG tried to help but couldn't fix it (nice guys but pretty ineffectual when it comes to troubleshooting the .308 rifles) so I added a PRI adjustable gas block and it's been flawless ever since (not sure why the adjustable gas block fix gets a thumbs-down over at 308AR.com). It was very obviously an overgassing issue and from what I have been reading, CMMG now knows about the oversized gas port issue in their barrels.

Since I installed the PRI, it's been perfect in terms of function with multiple ammunition types - SA Surplus, Hirt, Portugese, FGGM 168, LC Match - you name it, it shoots it. I have been more concerned with function testing and "minute of man" shooting up to this point but it was a decent range day so I thought that I would see what she could do.

Glass is now a Leupold VX-II 3x9x40 Tactical on an ARMS 5 mount (yes - I know, but it's all I had sitting around and it predates the LaRue mounts). All I had today was PRVI Ball, Portugese Surplus Ball, and FGGM 168GR. Shooting at 120 yards (bench but no bags) I was consistantly getting a little under 2" with the PRVI, 2.5-3" with the Portugese, and around .75" -1" with the FGGM (minus the occasional called flyer). I had one great string with the PRVI as I was shooting in the scope (10 rounds w/ one flyer) where everything was touching as I worked my way down.

Overall, I was impressed enough to keep the 18" barrel for now and keep working with it. I'm still learning the gun and with decent ammunition it seems to be capable of acceptable to very good accuracy. I may swap the barrel out at some point but for now, it's doing its job, now I just need to do mine. The only thing I am going to change is the stock - while the MOE is a great little stock on a M4gery, it just doesn't give me the cheekweld I would like on a rifle like this.

Next time I'll take it to 300 yards and see what happens. It was damned hot in the sandpit and 4 hours was about all I could take...

Good Luck!

Sorry - Followup Pics. I wasn't planning on taking any but I snapped a couple early in the day. Just think of them as a random group of pics - no pencil notations, no standardized number of rounds, just some quick phone pics for my personal reference...

I also finally put a PRI adjustable block on mine and instantly cured the ejection problems and also it feels like it softened the recoil impulse. I put a 50 round course of Tubbs Final Finish fire lapping bullets through my barrel. With the Federal GMM's I have gotten a few 1 inch groups. Hopefully I can match that or better with some good handloads. I really like Nosler Accubonds so I am going to see if I can make them work. If not then one of the other long skinny bullets I have stacked up on the bench surely will shoot. (At least to the limits of my old eyes.)

Really? I guess if 4moa was the best this barrel could do it wouldn't hurt.

You got your posts confused. Mine was shooting 1 to 1 1/2 in groups before I tried any load development. That's one of the reasons I kept the rifle and spent so much effort on it rather than taking the refund. Fire lapping generally doesn't do much for a bad barrel but it seems to give a little more performance with a barrel that has potential.

Yes reloads will cut groups in half, but I have been a rifleman for a long time and you need to
have about 200 rounds to go until the barrel
is broken in.
Don't freak if you are not getting 1/2 inch groups first time out !!! even custom benchrest rifles will need some rounds down the tube
until the barrel is broeken in
Shoot the best ammo you can for groups use the other rounds for practice and getting used to your new rifle.

I put over 300 rounds (not counting the fire lapping course) through mine just trying to get the darn thing to work. Just put a JP compensator on it and the recoil is now just about nothing. Being just a .308 it wasn't bad to begin with but now I can watch the little green circle appear on the Shoot- N-See target or watch the dirt kick up next to the clay pigeons laying on the 250 yard berm. I think I can find a load that will be better than my old eyes can take advantage of.

I started shooting 56 years ago and got fairly serious about it 45 years ago. I started re-loading 41 years ago. I will never claim to be a world class competitive shooter but most of the time if I don't close my eyes and grit my teeth when I jerk the trigger whatever is standing out there generally gets at least scared to death.
