Finished my .458 socom last month after finding the only 458 upper at a gunshow. RRA car length upper with a lo pro GB under MOE handguards and faux GB out front for a dissapator rifle. Still needs a MOE fixed stock. (hint hint magpul!) She kicks like a mule too.

Alright, this thing is not done, but it's close. I still plan to add a KAC BUIS and replace the Eotech with an Aimpoint Micro with Larue low mount. I'm also waiting on my SBR'd stamp to come back for a Noveske N4 receiver, but it will just have to be mated to a pistol lower for now. I am also going to order a Bowers V50 suppressor, but I doubt that stamp will be here this year.
Specs: 10.5" SS barrel Vltor CASV-M LAR-OPS4 side-charging upper Noveske Gas Block

Some very nice rifles in this thread. All of this is starting to make me think that I might need to build another....my rifle is a suppressed 16" but with can it has about a 22" bbl. Handles well but is a bit long.....I'm thinking SBR for the next and forgo a can.
A little off topic, apologies in advance but is there an "optimal, rule of thumb" bbl length for a .458S ? |

My hunting rifle is 9 1/2" built mainly for sub-sonic suppressed, but shoot some full velocities for fun. Built 10", 11", 12", and 16. The short barrels don't seem to loose much velocity. The 458S boar size, low pressure, and faster burning powders compared to most rifles, contribute to short barrels holding up the velocities.

I have .458 S in lengths of 13.5, 14, 16, and 20 inches. All of them with the same load shot on the same day are within 50 fps of one another with the 14 inch (long throated for 500 gr. + bullets and bolt action) being the fastest. All are stainless Pac-Nor barrels, three by TJ and one by TROMIX, two are 1:18, two are 1:14, the 1:14 14 inch is the fastest by a tiny amount. |
